Hi I'm in the market for a new tv, lcd 40" or 42" but haven't a clue what all the blurb, sorry spec. means. e.g. 50hz as opposed to 100hz (what is that about even?) and is 100 better than 50. also presume the higher the contrast ratio the better the picture is. Please, someone take pity on me, i know a lot will probably laugh at me, don't blame ya. This is my first post n all on boards.ie.:o

The Hz is how many times the picture is drawn per second. 100 should be better if the LCD pixels can be truly switched on and off that fast, but it may not be the case in some instances.

The Hz spec is mainly relevant to fast moving action in the pic, like a soccer ball. The higher refresh rate is supposed to make the motion look smoother.

Contrast is the difference between the darkest part of the picture compared to the brightest. The higher the ratio the better. It mostly is relevant to how dark the blacks can be, as there is usually no problem with achieving brightness.

Plasma TVs tend to have no problem displaying fast moving action as the technolgy is better for this than LCD. they can also have significantly better contrast ratios - deeper blacks. They can also be cheaper too.

Personally would recommend Samsung, Sony and Panasonic in terms of quality and reliability, listed in order from cheapest to most expensive brand... Maybe last two are neck and neck these days though...

Hey guys, how come this TV is so cheap? It's a 50" plasma. I'll be using the TV for connecting to my laptop, watching the footie and gaming. Will this do? Is there anything wrong with it you can think of?

    Thanks!

Yes, the price is in pounds.

How about the same price but the currency symbol changed to €? :D

Since it says it has an MPEG4 tuner, it should be Saorview compatible, but I would ring them and check. Otherwise a really great set.
