I've seen similar products, and the novelty usually wears off quickly. Maplins do kits that allow you to build Crystal Radios powered by the airwaves themselves. They're great fun if someone wants to play around with Radio - might be an allternative? They're not loud though, and come with a weird earpiece from the dawn of time to listen with.
