Doesn't sound like a immobiliser to me as if the key wasn't coded or lost coding it wouldn't work at all my guess would be a faulty crank shaft sensor.if it is the immo I have the Renault clip which can recode the keys

is the crank shaft a big job?? so its prob the key?? how much is key to be coaded and where abouts ru???

No more awkward than a normal key, you just dont put it in to a slot in the steering column and turn. Principal is the same.

The cards are known to go faulty more readily than a regular key though.

There was suppose to be alot of issues with the Laguna immobiliser system. The card was not making proper contact to disarm the system.

The buttons have a tendancy to break. The keys are quite thin so using a bit of force will break them more than a nice thick key. The old "press hard when the battery is low" will result in damage for instance. Leavign them in your back pocket is also not a good thing.

The basic system is similar to a key though. The reader (key card slot on the renault/ rign on the ignition with a standard key) gets the signal from the key when its close enough and ets the car start.

The fact that its a key card rather than a smaller fatter piece of plastic with a metal key blade sticking out is irrelevant.

Some keys are just not as reliable as others or more prone to damge from not being looked after.

The keys for a MkII Xantia for instance. When you hold the key to press the unlock button the pcb is sideways with the button pressing down along it. They break off over time. I'm very carefull with my cars and doubly so with my Xantia keys but I have to open and solder one of my keys again for the 2nd time in 4 years now cos its broken.

The first thing to do is get the keys and everything checked on the Renault clip.op I'm in Kildare if that suits

Dude I thought you worked in a BMW garage ? But on the up side these keys/cards can be recoded so you might be in luck this time
