    hi all.
I'm thinking of buying an ex-rental trek 4500.
firstly is the bike any good and secondly whats your opinion on ex-rentals.

    Hi Trapp

Trek 4500 would make a good entry level beginner bike to get started on.

Regarding it been an ex-rental, it depends who previously owned it and how well it was looked after.

If it belonged to one of the well known mtb rental companies then it should be fine, they usually change their stock frequently to keep them fresh, rental bikes are usually ridden by beginners so arn't ridden hard or trashed and if it is damaged it is repaired properly as they need their bikes to work for their customers.

Hope this helps and good luck.

Whats the discount over new? CRC similar spec bike for around €650

The fork is a bit weak, so I would expect to change it for a decent air fork at some stage. Bontrager saddles are torture devices, so you might want to change that too.

    Also, check:
brakes are working - no rubbing or leaking
wheels are running true and spokes are not loose or broken
tyres are good - not split/nicked
fork works, no damage or cracks
gear changes are smooth and working on all cogs
headset - no rocking when brake applied, steering smoothly

above all, make sure you buy the right size bike for your height.
