    Hey guys,

I'm looking to write songs, but given that I'm only one person, it's a bit hard to get everything down alone..

Looking to record from my guitar/bass (or vocals) straight to computer. Running Windows 7 (with 4gb ram). I'd probably be wanting to lay down one instrument (eg) guitar first then record the others on top.

    Budget is very low. :(

Can anyone advise me on software & hardware required? I've seen jacks in the music shop that seem to be guitar lead to headphone jack (if that's how to describe it..), was wondering if it's just a matter of using one of these with the right software?

    (clueless here)

There's literally tons of threads on this on this forum already.

You're looking at getting a USB audio interface. Something like an m audio fast track, focusrite saffire 6 usb, presonus firebox. The markets flooded with small decent quality 2 channel usb audio interfaces.

I recommend the Focusrite. You'll be able to record at decent quality and it has enough ins, outs and options for it to be useful even once you start getting better and more creative with how you record.

Thats the Hardware. For software I recommend REAPER. It's a powerful DAW( like protools, cubase, logic etc...) it's free to download for 60 days and works fully after it even if you don't pay the relatively cheap fee( it's like 60 dollars).
It's easy to use, powerful and constantly updated (for free!) and comes with enough stock plug-ins to do whatever you will need till you get better at mixing and know what you want.

I highly suggest reading through a few beginners guides to recording/mixing online and the best way to get really into it is by doing it.

I don't recommend and of those guitar lead-> USB leads. They're poor quality and with audio you really get what you pay for.
