Anyone own or have driving experience with a 2008 - 2010 year coupe models. What are they like to drive and are they a better buy than a A4?

Mickdw has the 1.8T. Get a Quattro if you are buying one. Fine bus in fairness..

    Ive a 2008 1.8T coupe since new.
Front drive is not good if you like to drive it.
3.0 tdi would be the one really, the car is designed to be quattro.
Apart from that, Ive had a few issues sorted under warranty such as a new ignition slot and the air con pissing out all its gas. Drivers seat back pretty much fell apart at 25k miles - the foam was replaced. Also had a window regulator fail outside warranty and it was a bit of a fiasco with one dealer telling me both doors had to be changed as they have to talk to each other at total cost of €700. In the end, I fitted it myself, and audi paid half the cost of the part so €100 all done. There was a serious delay (weeks) on getting the part too which was a bit sh1tty as the window needs to move up and down alittle as you open and close the doors. I spent alot on tyres getting it to handle reasonably.
That said, Ive not had to spend anything on it really on repairs out of warranty so far and there is not a sign of any worn bushes etc at 60k miles now and given that I drive on mayo roads, thats pretty good.
It looks pretty good and has been reliable.
I probably now have one of the more sorted 1.8T A5s through much trial and error (and money) with tyres and alignment. I might even sell it:D

Are the quattro much heavier on juice than the standard two wheel drives?

I am on the lookout for an A5 coupe for a while now, i wouldn't buy a new one but id buy one 2-3 years old, but like you I would be travelling on some bad rough roads with this machine so I'm not 100% sure if it could stand up to bad road surfaces. Was looking at a few bmw 320ds coupes also but didn't like the ones I test drove.

Well yes kind of because the quattro will be coming with the larger engine.

You can get the Quattro in the 2.0 but they would be rarer than the 3.0 tdi..

It will stand up to the surface alright but they do tend to pull in the direction of the road surface. Im running 18" wheels. 17" are the smallest they come with but look terrible. The 18s have 245 tyres, which imo are too wide for the front of a car.
Insist on a weekend with the car if buying from a dealer for the above reasons to see how you like it.

I don't know if I would go with the 3.0tdi? The engine size seems a bit too big and running costs would be higher. It wasn't part of my plan. Would you have any idea of the MPG for the 3litre and are they only available in automatic gearboxes or can you get manual ones with them?

I commute to work every day and its about 55miles one way to work and home again is another 55 miles so I'm travelling over 100miles a day. The 2.0tdi would be ideal but doing a bit of web searching they are like you said rare enough.

3.0TDi wouldn't cost you a fortune to run.

It would cost about 20 quid per day for that mileage.

Don't mean to hijack this thread but, would you recommend buying a 1.8 A5 ?

They have some bad characteristics due to what appears to be poor front drive setup and also caused IMO by the widening of the A4 derived suspension setup. They are very sensitive to tyre type. The factory choice made it a handful on uneven roads.

Is that the same 170bhp 1.8t engine that's in the Golf Gti?

I have the 2.7 TDi 2008. Great machine, really economical too for the size of the engine.

Nope. The 1.8 in the A5 is the newer TSi engine. The 1.8t your thinking of was the 24v unit and retired a good few years ago. It was available in 150bhp, 163bhp, 180bhp and 225bhp.

seems a load of VAG stuff for next year is getting the 120bhp tfsi engine.
though there is an option for 160... obviously not to intrude on the 2.0tfsi at 180 and 210bhp. I would have thought an old fiesta 1.6 would make 120 horses if you bolted on tfsi.
