    Hi folks,
Some of you may have seen my two recent threads, one asking is Windows 7 a viable replacement for XP, which was deemed it is indeed, the other asking for advice on a new laptop. Well I ordered the new laptop with Windows 7 64 bit today and I'd like to get cracking on it as soon it arrives, will be doing a complete format first.

Once I have it ready, along will come the program installations.

Now I've entrusted the following programs over recent years, some which I installed only after a lot of research on the best program for each task I needed.

Am I likely to run into any issues installing them on Windows 7? I have install shells which are years old, before 7 was even around, will these still work or will I have to seek W7 compatible install shells?

A list of programs I've relied on; some for about 10 years of XP use.
    Media Player Classic
    Winamp
    Firefox
    Thunderbird
    Digsby Chat Client
    Avira Anti Virus
    Exact Audio Copy
    ACDSee
    Acronis True Image
    CamStudio
    Daemon Tools Lite
    dbPowerAmp Music Convertor
    DVD Decrypter
Nero (I think I have 6 installed currently on XP)
    DVD Shrink
    Tag Scanner
    Garmin Mapsource
    FileZilla
    OpenOffice 3.0
    StaxRip
    Cabbage
    Rainlendar

A lot of these programs would be very customised in terms of how I've set them up. I'd like to be able to just use the installshells I have (I have them all saved to an external HD anyway!) and be able to just copy the settings with both laptops on at the same time. All of these programs are as lite as possible as I'm quite OCD when it comes to having stuff on my laptop that I don't use.

Has anyone had problems with any of the above on a W7 install and if so did you have to use alternative programs?

Any feedback appreciated, just preparing :)

most 32bit software should run fine on a 64bit system

You shouldn't have any problems running any of those programs on Windows 7, even Nero 6 should run fine!

That's great news, thanks a lot! So even programs compiled and made before Windows Vista, nevermind Windows 7, was even announced, should still be ok? :)

Yes, pritty much, Microsoft arn't as much like Apple in that sense. I've got certain software that was designed for Windows 95 (Accounting packages) for someone working ok and Windows 7 32bit, Remember Windows 7 Pro and above have Windows XP mode, a virtualised Windows XP professional enviornment if you need to run really old software, even IE6 :P, but the apps you mention should have zero issues.
    Just to add:
32 bit Windows 7-Will run 16 bit applications
    64Bit Windows 7-Won't run 16 bit applications
All the ones you mention are 32bit btw!

I'm only getting the home version of W7, but is the XP module like the windows virtual thingy on apple, or is it just more "compatible"? As in, do you have to run and install these programs on a separate partition, in a separate way that can't be used in conjunction with other programs at the same time?

Windows XP Mode offers a host virtualisation feature, as in you could have a shortcut to IE6 running on XP in your Windows 7 start menu, on clicking it IE6 will open as if on the host OS. Its a bit like parrallels in OSX in that regard. You have to install program in the Windows XP mode guest machine, and create shortcuts in Windows 7 manually iirc. Tbh I never really need to use it! Don't think I installed it since last format a few months back!

You might want to have a look at using 64bit installers to try get the most out of your CPU..

An option that I often use when reconfiguring my work laptop after a re-image is a multiple application installer.. for choice alone I use http://allmyapps.com/ another option is http://ninite.com/
