Disappointing, seems like Diaz GSP will never happen. Diaz will walk through Condit id say.

Assuming Diaz wins vs Condit, and assuming he manages to hold the title till GSP is back in fighting form, then we might see them versus each other.
However I don't see Diaz being able to hold onto the interim belt even if he wins it. If Fitch is in the contendership he'll smother Diaz resulting in some truly impressive post fight tantrums.

Question is, why are they doing it this way at all. Do you figure its to prevent the division getting stagnant, or to add drama to the potential Diaz-GSP match if it does occur?

I guess GSP has a pretty serious injury, they usually go with an interim belt when they are not sure when the champ will be back. Like when Brock got sick , Randy wandered off for a while, Frank Mirs motorcycle accident etc

And if its ten months before he can even train again that means likely a over a year before he could actually fight.

Any injury to the knee is often serious but tearing your ACL is extremly serious. Not a huge GSP fan but hopefully he heals ok

    Ah shít.
I'm a big GSP fan and was dying to see him fight again soon. Hopefully he heals quickly and we can finally see GSP v Diaz.

With an ACL injury, the time frame can be massive.
An interim title is just a way to keep the division moving without stripping GSP.

Fell terrible for GSP, this could be very serious.

Potentially career ending if we're being honest. It'll be 15 months at least before he's back in the cage, early 2013 i'd say. the recovery period for an ACL is massive, some guys are never the same when they come back.It would be very unfair as well to expect him to come back and go straight into a A class fight which is normally what the UFC do, no tune ups. Many a career (in a cross modality of sports) has been ended by the dreaded cruciate. He must be absolutely gutted. commiserations to George.

Some comments from GSP's doctor below.
(It happened) defending a takedown, GSP had a hyperextension of his right knee. He felt pain and heard a crack inside. He completely tore the ACL in his right knee. Surgery is mandatory. There's no way he can compete with his right knee. I'm expecting a full recovery for GSP in six to nine months.

    Bloody interim titles!

Although it would be a good thing for Fitch is GSP is out for a long time. Fitch would smash Diaz and Carlos.C easily! Probably his only chance of ever wearing UFC Gold!

This is good news for Fitch.
If either Diaz, Conduit or GSP get injuried in 2012, he is becoming the Interim champ

And even if he does come back there is no way to tell how the tear will affect his shot and takedown defence.

Hate to hear of a fighter getting injured in that manner.

He injured the meniscus too I think. The doctor performing surgery said it's about 95% success rate and he's confident GSP will heal 100%

Having done my ACL (plus medial and patella) it can be a very long process to get back, what is worse its generally a double whammy as they take part of your hamstring or patella tendon to repair the ACL. Also, its never guaranteed that the first OP will sort it completely as seen when many professionals end up doing it again.

FYI - read somewhere that they reckon that doing your ACL ages your knee by 20 years!

terrible for GSP, hope he comes back 100% but u gota imagine it will affect his explosiveness, never mind what the layoff will do to him physically and mentally. guess a showdown with anderson is never likely to happen now
