Signal

Purchases a new TV a few months back Saorview whatever, and forgot about the fact that I had no aerial, living in apt. Blew down a few years back.
Old TV I had the basic four channels, though the quality was not great. No issues there, hermit and all.
Rang the management company, aerial was replaced, and there was no change to the signal within the apt.
Now I have the two TV's hooked up, the old one there is no change in the signal and have tried all methods of tuning it in. I get a better signal if I stick my finger in the cable and stand in the middle of the room!!
I have tried tuning the new TV and there is no signal whatsoever, both digital scanning and manual scanning, and setting to the relevant frequency.
I have been told by the company who replaced the aerial that the signal is good, from outside, and that a "faceplate" needs replacing at a charge of €100. Sound ok ??
There is also a free to air box as well, pre installed with channels, and no reception either, what to do?

Odd. The 'faceplate' is just the plate on the wall of your apartment that has the connector, or connectors, on it. Has it got old-fashioned (normal) coaxial sockets into which you plug the aerial lead, or is there a threaded bit sticking out onto which something is screwed (called an F connector)?
Just wondering if your apartment is wired up for satellite, or UPC/cable, or what.
Ask them to make clear just what signal they say they have provided to you - and at what point is it definitely 'good'.
If it's the case that the signal is UHF and the aerial is correctly aligned, then you should be able to sort it with just a screwdriver if you have to replace the faceplate with something else. Unless it's something terribly exotic I'd suspect you are talking €5 parts at the most.

Any of your neighbours handy with a screwdriver and maybe a soldering iron? Have they got terrestrial reception?

... or alternatively, the signal is OK in the cabinet in the hall, and the charge is to 'connect' it into your apartment. Sounds like your cable in the wall goes nowhere.

Have you tried a "Rabbits Ears" type aeriel? Or a coathanger? In many places these pick up the Saorview signal just fine. Not where I live though:(.

This is a possibility, took a look at the connection on the wall, un screwed the socket, and there are two cables connected to the outlet, coax cable im assuming.
Have two cables, one normal aerial connector and one aerial/screw in for the free to air.
Apt is only 6 years old, and other residents have sky, so am assuming decent reception too.

You need to discover if the 2 cables going to that socket are sky only.

Can you supply photographs of the socket unscrewed and screwed on and also of the roof aerial.

You also need to go to one of the other apartments to see what they have working.
Satelite reception is not the same as saorview or analogue reception,so whilst they may have sky via their sockets,it doesn't follow that they have terrestrial saorview via them aswell.

Is there actually a charge for what comes down that cable? It's a puzzle if it's an internal system and not upc or something as even if it's a sat cable and you get sky, they are paid independently.

    All sorted.

There were six cables in the one box, coming out of the wall.
    • The two that were connected had no signal.
    • Other two which were cut and prepared for connection had no signal.
    • Final two unprepared for connection had a signal, and were hooked up.
Plate was replaced, from two connection's to four connections, two sat and a TV and FM\DAB, though no radio aerial connected in apt.
Tuning in, my cables were faulty, standard white cable, and there was a very weak signal, so these were replaced, raw cable and connectors screwed\pushed onto each end, and all was connected up and tuned in and I now have Saorview and Free to air with about 200/300 stations though a lot of rubbish on the free to air.
Arrived at 10:10, and left at 12:45 and same fee as quoted above, and a Happy Christmas awaits..

Having bought the Saorview box from Argos, it worked straight out of box getting a 91% signal channel 22. But it stopped getting the signal after about 15 minutes - I had moved the aerial cable (rooftop aerial) to fit box underneath tv.
Changed the aerial cable back to the tv and it works fine so can't be the cable? I am outside Ballinrobe and aerial appears to be pointed due south, I know that my digital signal comes from Castlebar. What can I do now, any advice appreciated.

You should have started a new thread.

Castlebar is to the north of Ballinrobe (I'm sure you know :)), so either you're mistaken about your aerial direction or it may be pointing at Maghera.

Do you have decent analogue TV3? Can you try manually tuning Saorview on UHF channel 48? If this doesn't work, post a photo of your aerial(s).

I will do as you suggested and will start a new thread.

Sorry for intruding on this thread.
    Thanks for quick reply.:o

Are you north or south of Ballinrobe? I'm north of Headford and I get a fine strong signal from Maghera.

North of Ballinrobe but managed to get box going - one of the settings was switched on instead of off (antennae aerial). Channel 22 Castlebar with a strong signal.
