Keyboard gets unresponsive, sluggish, sticky

My laptop is a HP ProBook 4730s running Windows 7 Professional. I have noticed over the past month or two that the keyboard tends to get somewhat unresponsive after a few days use.

It first becomes apparent when all of a sudden, my typing throws up loads of spelling mistakes as some key presses are not registered. If I hold down the arrow down key, it only fires once so I cannot use it to scroll down web pages for example. In order to restore normality, I have to reboot the machine. I should mention that I seldom power down the laptop, I use the lid close to put it in sleep mode and charge it as necessaty.

Has anyone come across this type of behaviour before? I thought I might have a virus or keylogger but a full scan of avast has found nothing. It's very annoying and a little worrying so I's really appreciate any replies.
