Motor tax confusion

The mother's car tax is up at the end of the month. In order to avoid the increase, I was thinking she should renew now to avoid the increase.

My question is even if she pays now does the new tax start on renewal date or on date of payment?

Your Mother should have got or will get a tax renewal form with a PIN on it so you can pay online. This WILL have the current rates on it not the increased rates that apply from Jan 1st.

The new tax will be valid from the renewal date for the full period you pay for. I done mine a month before it was due and got the full 3 months

Her new tax takes over from the current one on the renewal date. If her tax is up at the end of December, she'll get the renewal notice before then, and will be able to pay on the current rates.

Say it arrives today, and she immediately goes online and pays for a year, her next renewal date will still be the end of December 2012.

Mine was due up at the end of this month and I still haven't received my reminder in the post with my online pin. I wonder if it's a ploy by the tax office hoping I forget then have to pay it in jan under the new rate??? Anywho I went on line yesterday and retrieved my pin via email and paid my tax at the 2011 rate.

To be fair, it seems they send out the reminder about 2 weeks in advance of expiry. Was always the case for me anyway.

Just probably hasn't been issued yet. My car is up too and I haven't got the renewal form either but not expecting it yet.

I've always had mine in the first week, that's what had me wondering and fired up the conspiracy theorist in me lol especially when the pin can be retrieved on the site immediately.

My wifes car is due on the 31/12 Is there a way for me to avoid the 13 Euro increase by paying at the motor tax office (or will it show the new rate you recon?)
Attached is what the online renewal price, I wonder would it be the current rate at a motortax office.

Just retrieved my PIN now as my Motor Tax is up at the end of the month and the tax rate has been updated to the new one! €660 for me now and it was €614 last year..... Sneaky seeing as the increase is not supposed to be valid until January!

If car was due tax from 1st December, you could still tax it at old rate of €614.
Because it's due tax from 1/1/2012, then you have to pay the new price.

What you said about having to pay 2012 rate of tax when taxing the car this month. My tax runs out at the end of this month and I hadn't received my renewal reminder with on line pin in the post so I went on line and retrieved the pin and paid my tax for next year at this years rates. It's all in the above post.

I presumed tax due from January 1st could be bought at the cheap rate. Seems not though.

It can if you tax it before they alter the rates on motortax.ie

Well, they have obviously altered the rates now. I'm raging because I had been waiting for the renewal letter.... Oh well, there goes half a tank of fuel in that extra €46 :(

I was waiting on the letter too and when it didnt arrive I had a feeling they were holding out for the new rates before they sent it out to maximise revenue. To be honest I do the same thing every year.

Same here, never got a renewal and when I went online the new rates kicked in.
Funny how efficient those self servants (formally called public servants) can be when the will is there.
Edit at 08:50, postman just brought renewal, new amount there :(
