If it's a WiFi iPad it can only estimate your location based on WiFi access points that are in Apple's database.

For it to work you need to be connected to WiFi and be in the vicinity of WiFi routers in Apple's database. This actually works pretty well, but it isn't proper GPS. For that you would need a 3G iPad.

Any link for that apple database, if possible

It works automatically as part of the iPad's Location Services. If you are connected to WiFi and it can't find your location then you are out of luck.

However, if you have an iPhone, you can tether it to the iPad using Hotspot and then the iPad can use the iPhone's GPS.

Running the risk of sounding condescending, I assume you have done a google search on this?
The first topic that appeared when I did this was a few things to try, the second was an Apple FAQ on location services in iOS 5.

    Yes I tried Google

The answer I got was resetting the ipad solved the trouble but iv done that

Do you have a link to what you found please

Iv also been on to apple themselves and we went thru a few steps and still no luck

Im currently deactivating my wifi security on my router and see does that make a difference

Are you in a rural area? How far away is your nearest neighbour?

The WiFi iPad's location services are next to useless unless you live in a fairly urban area with plenty of WiFi routers nearby. As I said, if you want actual GPS you should have got the 3G iPad.

Using your friends iphone isn't much use unless he is always going to be there with you.
Why not just use the paddypower mobile website?

For some reason I have "skyhook" in my head in relation to the database.
I think you are able to add locations to it somehow. Generally, its not a fault of the ipad, but a fault of the routers in ireland. I've never had an issue with wifi locations when abroad.

Just to add an interesting point: if I use find my iPhone and locate my mac mini it is found. The reason is, once I find my iPhone once and it is in my wifi network then now my airport 'knows' the location of my network and thus all devices on that network. Hence even though my mac mini has no gps and I have never told anyone where my wifi router is, it's location is known. I'm presuming that's how a database of wifi locations is created. Without that, it can only use your ip address which comes from wherever your ISP is based, ie limerick or Dublin or Galway etc.

I have an iTouch and location services apps work fine at home but could someone remind me how my Android phone is able to figure out my location when using the likes of the Dublin Bus app?

What I mean is this: If I have a UPC broadband router/modem in my house and I connect a device to it using Wi-Fi, how can an app on the device figure out my location given that there is no GPS involved?

Well, i assume your Android phone has GPS and shares that data with the Dublin Bus app. But it can also find out your rough location the same way your iPod Touch can, by checking any nearby routers in Apple/Google's database.

This could be because the router was used in Lim before and have been logged at an address in Lim.
When you move it somewhere else the DB still thinks it's at the old address and send this address out.
