Is diesel the future for Ireland?

Or at least, the immediate future?

What about those of us who want petrol cars?

I was thinking about buying new in 2012 and wanted to look at the new Hyundai i30 due soon but Hyundai will only be offering it with Diesel engines in Ireland. Is this the start of a trend?

Not that I've anything against diesel but for people like me, who do small mileage, (6-7000 miles per year) or who don't want diesel or the hassle of DPF regeneration etc. it seems our options are becoming smaller as the years go on (for new cars). Seems everyone is going diesel. And with big name manufacturers starting to offer only diesel in their cars is petrol becoming a niche?

I wouldn't be surprised to see the likes of Ford offering only diesel in the Focus for example pretty soon.

well there are plenty of second hand petrol models out there to do me for some time, after which I presume greater advances will be made in the electric/hybrid area so I'm planning on skipping diesel:)

That's been going on for years. A few years ago, Subaru had never even made a diesel engine. Now they don't sell any petrol cars in Ireland anymore.

Even Porsche is sticking a borrowed diesel engine in some of their cars

Asked my dealer if I should buy petrol next time as I do small mileage.
His reply was. " Why petrol? Do you want to be stuck with it?"

Having driven diesel for most of my life , I have recently changed to petrol. The modern diesel car is in general much more troublesome than the 300k mercs , peugeots and volkswagens of the 80s. People are ruled by cheap tax and most of the newer ones are pretty cheap on tax. The same emphasis on diesels is not in many other countries.:o

Diesels are getting more refined and powerful, however petrols are getting more economical also and the price of the fuel is equalising. At the end of the day a petrol engine is superior but for reasons that dont seem to matter to some people. There will be a market for both for some time to come.

Thats correct as the cayenne was petrol only up to 09 when porsche got the 3 litre diesel engine from VAG the company they tried to take over.

Not sure if diesel is the future for Ireland. The taxation regime is what drives sales here. I know of people who have bought diesel and will not do 8k in a year... crazy... why did they buy , because the tax was 200 cheaper on a similar petrol model. And they paid around 18 grand... mind boggles.. but if you're selling cars , you have to sell what joe public wants , not what you think he should have. :D

Funnily enough the opposite is what happened with the Focus, the previous model was diesel only (after the tax changes in 2008, they sold petrols for a short while then gave up on it), but the current car offers both petrol and diesel, as the petrol is in band B.

Soon there will be a 1.0 petrol turbo available in the Focus that's in band A.

Petrol is catching up on diesel with emissions, so low emissions petrols will be offered here as they still offer the price advantage over diesel.

I don't think the new downsized turbo petrols will last as long as the older petrols non turbo non direct injection petrols either, especially not with the way a lot of Irish people look after their cars...

A lot are going to get caught out paying for DPFs on their new little diesel runarounds.

When I explain that I rebuilt the the 3.5 V8 petrol in my 101 rather than putting a tractor engine in it, people look at me like I've got two heads

But it's in Ireland due to taxation.

In other countries, there plenty of petrol cars available.

Petrol will be back in the next 2 years as more manufacturers launch turbochargered 600cc to 1000cc 3 cyclinder petrol engines to provide the same power we have from today's normal 1000cc to 1800cc petrol engine in order to compete with CO emmisions of the diesel engines

Could diesel rise to be a good deal more expensive than petrol? I could certainly see it happening if demand continues as it is. Could negate any savings on economy as petrols improve.

Of course it will if we have more diesel cars with higher mpg visit the diesel pump less often well in order to keep the revenue from motorists flat you need to push up the price of diesel over petrol

It's all good though - the missus thinks it's a waste of time her running a 2.5 in and out of town every day and says she would be happy with a 1.8 / 2L. Sound, then I can upgrade the daily to a 4.4! ;) Only question is 740 or 840! :D
