Registering a Uk car in Ireland

    Hello,

We've just brought our Uk reged car to be re-registered in Galway, its a 10 year old Clio, 68k miles on it and worth £700. The girl on the desk said it would cost €700 to register the car. Is that about right? I've talked to a couple of people who thought it was very high, and my Dad registered his car, similar in age with 90k on the clock and it cost less than €50 a few years ago. Anyone registered a Uk car here?

I have looked at the website and every car is individually assessed so i cant get an exact quote, but €700 seems quite high.

Must have be a good while ago. For a few years prior to the changes in 08 the minimum was €319.

It's co2 based now and the mnimum prices are:

    A €280
    B €320
    C €400
    D €480
    E €560
    F €640
    G €720

The bands are based on the co2 tax bands. www.motortax.ie will give you those.

I wouldnt have though a Clio was over 226g/km but they may be applying the upper rate if they dont have a figure.

Yeah it was before 08. Oh well. Thanks for the info. :)

Is it Motor tax you are asking about or VRT?

The motor tax is done on the old CC basis as your car was registered in another country before 2008.

The VRT is calculated on the OMSP and the emissions of the vehicle. Go to ros.ie and input the details of your car. I tried a few variants of the Clio and all are coming in at €400. This is calculated at a 20% of OMSP of €2000. This sound way over the value of any Clio over 10yrs old unless its something really special:D. VRT is done through the NCTS now also.

The figure of €2000 is put there so that it gives the minimum figure of €400 for a band C car.

    Couple of things here.
If it is a car you owned in uk for a period of time and if you are returning to ireland to live, you may be entitled to an exemption meaning it would cost nothing to register (or maybe a flat fee of €50).
If you are not going to get the exemption, it is lunacy to even consider getting an Irih plate on that. Take it to uk, sell it and buy an Irish one.

It's the VRT, and it is going to be €720, more than the value of the old thing! Not much point paying that so we'll sell it and buy a car here.

    Thanks for the help.

Is there no Co2 figure on the V5? If not I'm sure Renault could provide one.

It sounds like theres no figure on the system so they are automatically putting it in the highest band.

A 1.2 16vclio of that era put out less than 150g/km, which would put it in band C and attract €400 in VRT.

    A 1.4 would be band D and a diesel band A.

I'll have to ring them on Monday and find out exactly what bracket they have it in and why. As you can probably tell, cars aren't my thing, so i dont know what the Co2 figure is, but i'll try and find out myself before i call them. If we can get it down to a few hundred that'd be worth doing.

If it is UK registered after March 2001 the CO2 will be on the V5.
