Being honest I'm a bit confused too. Wouldn't it be better for England to be based in the Ukraine rather than Poland for their group games? They are the top seeds and it is a very tough group.

England just don't do major tournaments well.

They decided on the base before the draw for fear of missing out on the top choices that were available, now it has been exposed as a dump so that worked well.

It would be much better to be based in the Ukraine, but they will need an excuse and other things than players and management to blame after all, and this one will suffice.

Wtf thats just crazy. They need all the help they can get given the pathetic record they have on the international front, they'll have to move closer surely?

Very surprised about it. Didn't know the nations had decided on their base before the draw was made. I had hopes for England next summer but now with France, Sweden and of course the Ukraine in that group, it's going to very tough. They will all fancy themselves against them. Hope Wilshere starts next summer. He could very well be what they are missing in midfield.

Stupid ****ers. To win the tournament they'll have to travel 10,000 miles.

But if they do win it, they already have a tune for a song.

I remember Krakow being featured on the Ross Kemp on gangs show and it looked a bit of a kip alright, so I don't know how they thought it would be the best base. Maybe the training facilities are good I don't know, but both Kiev and Donetsk have bigger clubs and would surely have facilities at least as good as anything in Krakow. Sweden played it clever and had options lined up in both countries.

This was discussed on Football focus, was talking to the famous Steve Stauton and he was saying in the WC when they where playing Germany the next day they had a round trip of 5 hours or something like that, just said the players didn't want to bother doing that the day before for a training session in stadium and then do next day. Seems logical alright to stay close to the stadium so your not stuck on a bus all day.

If your training hard etc it could be more of a chance of muscle tightening etc

Krakow is actually a really nice city and a great place to visit. Sure it has rough areas but do you judge Manhattan on problems in the Bronx? Do you judge Dublin based on gangland murders? I wouldn't use Ross Kemp as a measure for a city.

So based on so TV show that you saw you are convinced that the people in charge of selecting England's facilities got themselves a kip.

Its just a pity we never won the WC or the Euro's . We'd have had a quiet pint then confined the whole affair to the history books, never to be spoken of again.

Exactly. We're very modest folk. We've already won the Iceland tournament and the Unity Cup and you never hear us crowing about that. :pac:

Exactly, you'd think we were small-minded enough to celebrate the anniversary of a draw against England 21 years ago or something.

Exactly. We bang on a lot about the 1988 win and anyone (not just footy fans) could tell you Ray Houghton scored that day. By comparison I'd say you be hard pressed to find an indifferent punter who remembers that 1990 game, let alone the result and who scored for us that day.

I could be wrong but didn't the Ireland team book their base in Poland before the draw was made? So basically if we had been drawn in groups B or D, we would have been in the exact same situation.

I honestly don't see the problem in what they're doing

Well I don't think anybody was celebrating that result recently. Plus in fairness it was our first ever game in a World Cup tournament. So if people did mention the date over the summer, it is hardly an outlandish thing to mention as it is an important date in our soccer history.

That's true. I wonder why the countries who qualified pick their bases before the draw is made. I don't understand the rush. Surely it makes more sense to pick after the draw is made. It's still six months away after all. Also if they do pick then they should be allowed to change their minds after.

But England won't be stuck on a bus all day. They'll be doing a series of 90 minute first-class charter flights. That's why they made the decision.

Besides, it's only for three games anyway.

Apologies, I was thiniing of 1988. There was actually a anniversary programme made about it IIRC.

The point is still valid I think. We would bang on about a major sporting victory as much as England or any other country.

The problem with us is that we avidly consume the sports media of a foreign country that we dislike but paradoxically expect them not to be nationalistic about their own sporting hopes and victories.

England will usually be amongst the favouriites and why should they deny that.

Rooney's ban reduced to two games now. Available to play against the Ukraine.

What a fantastic base we have. England's doesn't look great but that's the way it goes. I have a great feeling about us next summer. England may struggle in their group and may find it hard to get out of.

Do you think the FA got a 403 - Forbidden when they went to enquire too?

Sorry for dragging this up but it bothers me more than it should at 3.20am in the morning.

Whats Englands plans for the day before each match? Are they going to just ingore their entitlement to train on the pitch for 60 minutes or are they going to travel from Krakow to Donetsk/Kiev and back twice in 24 hours. Or stay in a new base in Kiev/Donetsk the night before each game?

None of these alternatives make sense, with skipping the 60 minutes on the pitch probably the worst move they could make.
Because in those 60 minutes you can learn so much about distance of goal kicks, angles of corners in relation to the breeze, skiddy spots in the 6yardbox to test goalkeepers, distance of overlap from CM to LB/RB.
Even something as simple as testing a defensive structure from a freekick needs to be done in the stadium rather than on the practice ground, as a difference of a few metres in pitch dimensions could mess everything up.

Not sure. I'm sure Capello will have some sort of plan in operation. The friendly with Ireland is not going ahead. It will be very interesting to see how it develops for them and I can't wait to see how they get on in their friendlies before the competition starts. Am expecting big things from the likes of Wilshere and Carroll. Think those two are going to have a great Euros.
