    Hi,

Roscommon County Council are now part of MapAlerter, which is a free service for people in the county who want to receive SMS, Email and Phone service alerts from the Council.

The Council are using the service to provide up to date information around the county, especially for any severe weather period that may occur in the coming weeks.

MapAlerter.com is free to register and free to receive all alerts. The Council are consuming all the service costs.

Alerts are being issued for the following categories:
    1. Water Service Alerts
    2. Scheduled Road Closure Alerts
    3. Road Incidents (Oil spills, etc)
    4. Winter Service Alerts (Salting/Gritting)
    5. Other Alerts (eg, events, parades, etc)

    Useful links:
    http://www.mapalerter.com/roscommon
    http://www.roscommoncoco.ie/en/Services/Maps/Join_MapAlerter/

    The service works as follows:
    1. Register for free on MapAlerter
    - You can provide your Home and Work locations
    2. Roscommon County Council can then log in and issue alerts
    - The Council must identify a mapped area where the alert is relevant
    - If you live within this mapped alert zone then you will receive an SMS/Email (and even a phone call for emergency events)
    3. Alerts are delivered within 2-3 moments of being issued and all alerts are published on the website, Twitter, etc.

A typical SMS alert would be as follows:
"There is a water service disruption in Boyle from 2pm-5pm today. This is due to a burst pipe and Council staff are fixing this issue. Apologies for inconvenience caused".
Only people registered on the site in Boyle will receive this alert, as they are the only affected people.

The success of MapAlerter in Roscommon is based on getting local residents and workers from the county to register. The more people who receive alerts will mean the Council are communicating better at all levels.

You need a mobile and email to register. That encompasses about 99% of the population. However you can register landlines for "Phone Call Alerts" for emergencies so you can register a number of behalf of an elderly family member who may not use a mobile or the Internet.

I signed up and have yet to receive an alert about "Winter Service Alerts (Salting/Gritting)" obviously that's something that is not being done. Salting I mean!!!

    Hearing about Library services,though
