These suggestions may not work for you, but there's no harm in trying.

Go to Settings=> Mail, Contacts, Calendars => My Info

Tap My Info - your contacts might show up there. Now go back to your main Contacts screen & see if they are showing.

You could also try Settings => Mail, Contacts, Calendars => Import SIM Contacts

If you have them backed up to Google all you have to do is connect the iphone to pc open itunes click iphone in the sidebar click info in the tab and then click sync Google contacts all contacts will be restored.

Yes, definitely back up your contacts to Google Contacts in the future if you haven't so.

You don't even need to sync in the iTunes, just set up a Google account in the Settings -> Mail and bypass the iTunes Sync, it'll automatically sync every time you make a change on either side(iPhone or Google Contacts).

    Super convenient.

Slight warning though, if you have custom fields for phone numbers, the phone numbers won't show up in iPhone, you have to go back to Google Contacts fields like Home, Mobile, Work, etc... and you cannot use some of those multiple times, but IMO this is a small price to pay for such a convenience of not having to worry about ever accidentally deleting contacts or losing them if something goes wrong with your phone.

If you updated to ios 5, iTunes normally auto backs up the phone.

Might be a stupid question but have you tried 'restore from back up' through iTunes?

Or log in to the iCloud site from your computer if you have gone far enough down that road?

I'm having a similar problem. Didn't back up my contacts separately as I assumed phone back up would be enough. However, have backed up a couple of times while solving another problem and have now discovered that my contacts are deleted. I can only get back ups from today and yesterday, none of which seem to have my contacts. Can I access previous back ups?
