decided id like to start watching some sopranos again, this time on my ipad while travelling.
whats the easiest way of ripping my dvds to the ipad?
ideally id like to compress the files to save space,is there a particular way of doing this?

There is a free application for this Called Format Factory

Last summer I have converted all the Sopranos to mp4 to my phone as well -:))

Have you tried Handbrake? You need VLC installed as well to rip DVD's. It has presets but you can search for more if you Google them.

I stopped using Format Factory when it appeared on FFMpeg's hall of shame list.

    A couple of things here...

If you want to rip the DVD, you have to have something to deCSS it. That involves making a second disk image but the second image has the CSS removed by some utility. I used to do this back in the day but it's been a while so I can't remember a good utility now.

It might be as handy to get the episodes from a 'friend' who has already encoded them as AVI's and you can then either use something like 'It's Playing' to watch them directly on your iPad or use handbrake to reencode them specifically for the iPad.
