    Just a quick poll folks.

If you had the option tomorrow to remove Fluoride from the water, would you ?.

Many Countries have abolished water Fluoridation and alternatively Fluoridate salt.

Salt Fluoridation; gives the individual more choice about ingesting Fluoride, as non-fluoridated is also readily available.

If given the option tomorrow, would you... 31 votes

Remove Fluoride from the water supply.

I wouldn't have a tooth left in my head if it wasn't for fluoridated water.

    So, no.

They should replace the water in the taps with wine.

Red tap for red wine, blue for white.

I'd prefer if they got rid of the enterococci bacteria, nitrate, manganese, E.coli, aluminium, coliform bacteria and arsenic.

The arguments over the dangers of water fluoridation are usually what leads to these threads being closed down or drifting off into the realms of conspiracy theories.

Personally, I'm not the slightest bit convinced that it's a harmful practice. If it were, then its negative effects would be widespread and couldn't be ignored or hidden. Comparing fluoridation to chlorination is stupid.. if chlorine wasn't added to water then there would be a huge chance that many many people would become ill or worse. If fluoridation was discontinued then a tiny minority of people may develop slightly more cavities than they do now.

It's an ethical question more than anything. Is it right to medicate the entire population in order to reduce slightly the prevalence of a problem faced by a minority? Is it even effective in this day and age? Do you know anybody over the age of 20 that has never had a tooth filled?

There was some talk recently about adding trace amounts of lithium to water supplies as it's been shown to reduce suicide rates. How would people feel about that?.. It'll probably never happen, but the thinking behind the idea is similar to that of the proponents of fluoridation.

    http://bigthink.com/ideas/21538
    http://www.imt.ie/opinion/guests/2009/05/lithium-for-water-supply.html

Here's another study which suggests that the cessation of water fluoridation has little overall effect on the rates of dental caries.

    http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1600-0528.1998.tb01959.x/abstract

In all of the places where it has been discontinued, no major increase in caries rates have been observed. That's why the places in question have not started to fluoridate water supplies again.

Interestingly, under Article 40 of the Irish Constitution, it is set down that you have the right not to have your body or person interfered with. (the right to bodily integrity)..

    ..my views have not changed

    also... -
My first thought is that they don't use Fluoride in our water.. they use Hexafluorosilicic acid, an inorganic waste compound left over from the production of fertilizers.

My second thought is that these threads never end well. I'm against the mass-medication of the population though, even if it saves the lives of a few spastics that never heard of a toothbrush.

Does anyone really know why they don't want it other then "AAAAGH CHEMICALS IN MY WATER THIS MUST BE BAD THEY'RE CONTROLLING US"?

OP, stop smoking the paranoia inducing drug that is cannabis and reading pro-cannabis websites with articles opposing flouridation, which are actually opinion pieces written by really paranoid stoners who believe that 9/11 was an inside job. Also, eat some meat once in a while. It's good for you.

Problem: Apparent stoner thinks that the government is trying to control their thoughts by way of water flouridation.

Solution: Apparent stoner ceases using mind altering and paranoia inducing drug.

    Problem solved!

I wish they take it out but they won't. They are not interested in the likes of this for the next 15 years.

Here's a list of stuff containing fluoride, and the amounts of it within each product

    http://www.ars.usda.gov/SP2UserFiles/Place/12354500/Data/Fluoride/F02.pdf

How anyone can actually think that it's still necessary to fluoridate the entire water supply, despite the fact that there's so many other sources of it these days is beyond me.. I'm sure that 50 odd years ago it was the best option. There wasn't such easy access to dentistry back then, and not much of an intake of fluoride from other sources.

Would it not be more effective to identify those most at risk, and work with them to alleviate the problem?

When they discontinued fluoridating water supplies in a Cuban city, they simultaneously introduced rinsing programs in schools. It had a massively positive effect.. the rate of caries in children decreased from 61.6% to 26.3%.

And that's Cuba.. a nation far less well off than Ireland. Of course there are other variables at play, but does such a change in numbers not warrant some scepticism in the practice?

Why not attempt to do what they did? Pro-actively tackle the problem rather than trying to make it go away while ignoring the cause..

Someone is obviously comfortable with sticking his head in the ground and when he does comes up, he talks about things he hasn't a clue about what hes talking about.

There is a good reason to be a paranoid about fluoride found in our drinking water...
