Android Market developer's income tax

    Hi,

I am a computer programmer living in Ireland and would like to offer an application for sale in the Android Market. I am a bit hesitant though because of tax issues, since Google says it is the developer's responsibility.

I am an individual, I have a full time job (non android related) and I am not planning to make a company or anything like that, meaning I wonder what responsibilities I have towards the tax office as an individual.

As far as I can see the usual topics are VAT and income tax, but apparently even people working in accounting are confused. E.g.
    http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Android%20Market/thread?tid=35ef5e7eb2f437c9&hl=en

Could anyone please give me at least some hints about what I should look after in this matter? Also do you think if I go to the local tax office and ask these questions then I'll get straightforward answers?

Thank you, I appreciate all answers.

    Best regards,
    Joe

Taxation forum would be a better place to ask.

The tax office isn't there to give advice. Try a city or county enterprise board instead. e.g. dublin city enterprise board: www.dceb.ie .. good news is that there's an information day on Friday 9th.

VAT is only an issue if you sell more than €75k a year (i.e. based on selling price, not profit). See http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/vat/registration/index.html

Here is information on setting up a company:
    http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/employment/types_of_employment/self_employment/setting_up_a_business_in_ireland.html

Here is info on how much income tax you will end up paying:

A limited company structure may be more tax efficient.

If you want, I can move this to the taxation forum or the Entrepreneurial & Business Management forum.

For what it's worth, it's no problem being a full time employee and registered sole trader at the same time. You file your returns at the end of the year. VAT is filed every 2 months I think.

Anyway, let me know if you'd like this thread moved.

    Hi tenchi-fan,

Thank you for your answer. I am going to send an email to the city enterprise board, we'll see what they reply, thank you for your hint.

    He Eoin,

If you think that this question better belongs to that other category please move it there. I appreciate your help.

    Thank you for all!

    Joe
