Well most people rather stupidly have their oil tank in plain view and secured by a ****ty lock.

    So don't do that.

Well it won't be heating oil. What else can you get a dose of in Athlone?

Happens at home too, its always the inbred family down the road.

Better locks on the tank, or cctv. They'll only steal a rottweiler too.

Set fire to it at night before you go to bed and it'll be impossible to get near enough to steal it. You're welcome.

Change to gas, it's hard to steal gas.

    Is it?

Happened to my cousin in Kerry a few weeks ago, one thing I'll say about this is travellers always get blamed for this kind of thing and I'm beginning to think other people take advantage of that.

    Does!!!!
And I'm renting so nothing i can do about where the tank is situated.

lock or not won't make a difference, the outlet pipe was disconnected!

CCTV, good idea. I'd say it would be a barrel of laughs watching an oil thief stealing oil and a spur of the moment dog theft. He'd more likely wind up wearing the dog on his face.

I'd never get sick of watching that.

No point locking the tank, they'll undo the pipes and drain it quicker.Build a small shed around the tank.Even stick up some sensor lights, they're only about a tenner each.If they think it's too much effort to steal your oil they won't bother.

This was discussed on RTE a couple of weeks ago, they said it was akin to leaving up to €1000 in your yard which is true.

What's the alternative? A 20 euro lock? Most oil tanks are plastic and a battery drill will chew them up in about 10 seconds. Locks arent worth a fcuk.

I have my back garden locked and oil tank is never more than half full. Not great but what can ya do?

that does NOT work. we had one at the caravan sales yard and all the tinkers did was knock it over the head with a bat then proceeded to steal some caravans!

Put a neighborhood watch sticker on it that'll scare the bejesus outta them!

Seriously though I think you can get a light sensor with a camera on it and a speaker that announces they're being recorded.

That or a noisy dog that'll wake you and a big shotgun.

Where in Athlone did this happen? Check your home insurance details as it might be covered.

The company won't accept them if there's kerosene all over them.

Someone on Dragon's Den last year invented something to stop oil being stolen. Can't remember if it was on RTE or BBC but it would be worth looking up I think.

This happens everywhere in Ireland though.
