    Hi there,

Just wondering what size of water tank people would recommend me to put in our new build. We will have geothermal heating which will heat all our hot water.

Have spoken to others who have our system already installed and are very happy with it. These people all have 200L tanks and have said they never run out of hot water so we were thinking of going for same. However our builder seems to think this is a bit small!!

    Any opinions please?!

Depend how many is living in the house, For example how many showers/baths will be had in the morning. And dish washing etc during the day. No harm to have it oversized as, at least you wont run out. It also shouldn't cost you any more to heat as its geothermally heated

Based on our lot of teens that could be per teen:D:D

OP: on the geo, its all very well to say others have the same system above ground but what is crucial here is the geology of your site and the plans for extracting heat from it.

I cannot stress that enough so u need all the underground intell sorted before u sign.

For example someone might have several 100 m's of pipe in a lake or stream as the source and u are sitting on solid rock with not a bit of water in sight

i have a 500l tank. it is tripled coiled (3rd coil for possible future solar panels). Each coil is 33mm pipe in diameter (normal tank 25mm diameter). The linear metrage of each coil inside the tank is approx 5.5m (normal tank is approx 2.5m).

This tank is specifically built by a firm for the plumber who done my house. He said that 1 hour at night rate will heat all that hot water because this tank is built for Heat Pump systems. He is right! Costs me 22 pence sterling per day for 500 L of hot water.

    Happy days

So it is just not the size of the tank but the make up of the tank.

Dont want to doubt you - but if 500L was stone cold it would cost more than 22 p to heat

sorry, you are right of course. I think it took 2 nights to heat from scratch when the system was commissoned. but since then one cyle each night leavs more than enough HW.
