If it won't fit in there, it's not worth taking with you.
You will struggle to get all the baby equipment and 2 large dogs in the back of anything in my opinion. It's quite scary how much space a pram takes up, even folded. In the Mondeo you should be able to get the wheel bit of the pram in lengthways rather than sideways, which will make things sooo much easier.
This is the base bit of our pram in herself's V50. While it fits, it doesn't leave space for anything else. If you are using it with the pram, the pram has to go on the back seat, and that only just fits in with child seat in there too.

Something cheap and big? This should sort you til the NCT runs out. I'd assume you'd want to keep as much money in reserve with a child on the way?
I'd be more of the mindset to get something cheaper and will last you the next 2 years like the car I posted rather than spending 10k and putting myself in a pickle!
If you've sorted your finances by then, you can properly assess what car you need then. Like you've said you're "only beginning to realise the impact that this is going to have on my life"
Unless you've a very secure job, or your other half does!

Do the dogs travel often in the car? They mustn't be too big if they fit in a Colt.
They go everywhere with us and weigh just under 80 kilos between them, so they are not small - but at the same time, they are not Great Danes. About the size of a small alsation, each. As i said, they curl up together if they don't have space to stretch out. Both usually stay in the back seat lying ontop of each other, or one takes the front if hubby isn't in the car.
We'll definitely have to do this. We live in the middle of nowhere, so getting anywhere requires the car, and typically the dogs come too - so we need space saving options on everythingI'd advise spending time choosing the right pram that can fold very neatly.
