I'm seeing the motor tax increases for the different bands, but not for the "old" system, or indeed the vintage category...

    Can anyone confirm this?

I'm not sure I like the sound of this, however:
Initiating consultation process with the motor industry and other parties to commence in early 2012 to review options for the improvement in VRT and motor Tax revenues in future years.
Interesting how the emphasis is on improving the revenues, rather than the system.

Digging round the government budget site (rather than bloke down the pub), here a quick budget round-up:

    Carbon Tax

Carbon Tax on fossil fuels introduced in Budget 2010 to increase from the equivalent of €15 per tonne to €20 per tonne. Increase to be applied to petrol and auto-diesel from midnight tonight.

    Increase (incl. VAT):
    Petrol /Litre (1.499) 1.4 cents 0.93%
    Auto-diesel /Litre (1.479) 1.6 cents 1.09%

    VAT

VAT rise of 2% to 23% from 1st January 2012. From then, a litre of fuel will have around 3 cent more VAT on it in addition to the above Carbon Tax increase.

    Motor Tax

Proposed rates of Motor Tax increases with effect from 1st January 2012:

    Private Vehicles: | | |

    Veteran & Vintage:| | |
    Motorcycles | €22 | €24 | €2

    VRT

No changes yet. However, ones to watch:
Consultation process with the motor industry and other interested parties to commence in early 2012 to review options for the improvement in VRT and Motor Tax revenues in future years. (Details of the consultation
"VRT and Motor Tax Public Consultation on adjusting the current CO2 bands and rates in line with technological advances in motor vehicles" on the Department of Finance website - submissions by 1st March 2012)
Consultation process with the motor industry with a view to putting in place an export refund scheme which would allow for a refund of VRT contained in a vehicle on the permanent export of the vehicle to another Member State.

of course the motor industry gains nothing from the Classic Car scene and would lose nothing if it got stung. I don't like the sound of that either.

It would lose plenty. Spares, tyres, oil, cleaning products, all the garages that are involved in repairs and servicing, towing firms (:(), insurance companies and so on. There are loads of people whose livelihoods depends to an extent on classics. Admittedly the SIMI who tend to represent new car dealers has no interest in us but the real motor industry has plenty to gain from us.

Here's hoping the gov look at the classic scene as a needing benefit to community, rather than taxing it as a benefit to the exchequer.

If they did some silly with the rates it would put alot of people off using classics. Personally if it went to the current CC rates I wouldnt keep the car.

...if they go to cc-rates, you won't be able to give it away, let alone sell it........damhik........ :(

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”
