Porto V Zenit St. Petersburg will be my choice of viewing tonight. Really is a winner takes all scenario.

    Hopefully it's a decent game.

Er - they have nothing to play for tonight, unlike Chelsea.

Same with the Chelsea/Valencia game, except a score draw would not be good enough for Chelsea!

I would have thought the game involving the British side(and the two better teams) would be more interesting.

Whatever floats your boat I suppose.

Marseille vs Dortmund could be a great match. Dortmund have to score 4 or more.

You're better off not listening to the trolling shite both sets of pundits/anchors come out with when they're covering us.

Chelsea, Porto and Marseille to the business in their respective groups.

Well, Dortmund need to score 4 or more and hope that Olympiacos get beat by Arsenal in Greece. And Arsenal are playing the kids, so it's pretty likely that Olympiacos will get a result.

Dortmund don't really have a hope in hell tbh.

someone on the radio today said chelsea need a draw, so a score draw isn't good enough for chelsea?

If Chelsea and Valencia draw, they will remain level on points.

A 0-0 draw is good enough for Chelsea as they got a 1-1 in Valencia, so they would lead on the head to head by virtue of having scored more away goals.

However if the game finished 1-1 this time around, the head to head rule would't count as both games finished the same score, so it would go to goal difference. Valencia have a better goal difference so would go through.

If it finishes 2-2, obviously Valencia would go through by virtue of the head to head rule as they scored more away goals.

However there is actually a scenario if the game finishes 0-0 that Chelsea won't go through, and that's if Genk beat Bayer Leverkusen, which is possible but unlikely.

In short, Chelsea basically need to be thinking about winning this game.

Posted in the Chelsea Match thread
Contrary to reports elsewhere, Chelsea are not guaranteed to qualify with a 0-0 draw.

If Leverkusen lose in Belgium then Chelsea would be eliminated with any draw, including 0-0. This is because when three teams are level on points a mini-league is created without the games involving Genk. Leverkusen would finish top having secured one more point than their rivals. Valencia will finish above Chelsea by virtue of having scored one more goal than the London club, with both having five points and a goal difference of +1.

I'm assuming that's correct? Head scratching

a 0-0 will do them as long as Genk don't win , but a scoring draw will mean Valencia go thru

I thought Bayern would actually want to help knock City out, but with all those changes City should win.

Yeah, City should be three or four up. Napoli now know they have to score at El Madrigal or else we are going out. If there is any justice tonight, the Azzurri will go through, we were the better team over the two games.

Are Lyon going through now on GD (winnign 6-1) or does the head to head with Ajax come in to it?

EDIT: Lyon going through. Winnign 7-1 at the min.

They will go through because they get more points, nothing more.

Looks like Lyon are gone ahead according to the BBC.

Lyon 7-1 up now. Ajax have supposedly had two perfectly good goals ruled out against Real.
Lyon will go through as it stands.

Well done Napoli, good to see them get through and make it 3 Italian teams in the knockouts, is there any other league with 3 teams left?

Am I right In hearing Lyon needed 7 goals to go through, and they end up beating Zagreb 7-1?? Something isn't right about this....

They were 7 goals worse off than Ajax. They needed Madrid to beat Ajax and them to beat Zagreb. They only needed to win by 5 as it turned out because Ajax lost by 3.

Only needed to win by 4 since they'd scored more goals. :pac:

Just watched the Lyon Zagreb highlights, I would love to see the betting patterns for this, players looked like they were hardly trying

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 15,721 Mod ✭✭✭✭dfx-

United and City are where they deserve to be, whether Ajax are is another thing.

Looking at some of those Lyon goals, there has to something up. Zagreb players weren't even trying, not a foul, not a tackle, not a challenge, not a header, not bothering to run with wingers to stop crosses.

I was watching the goals from the UTV highlight show of the Zagreb Lyon match and I have to agree with what Gordon Strachan said, he commented that the Lyon players didnt even look ecstatic when they were scoring all these goals.
It was 1-1 at half time so surely Lyon must have thought they were going out. I would have expected a lot more emotion from them once the possibility of an amazing comeback was on the cards.

BREAKING NEWS: Lyon have been thrown out of the competition by UEFA for match fixing. Manchester United will take their place in the last 16 as they are the highest ranked team in Europe.
