Audi DSG Auto clutch-any disadvantages?

Are there any disadvantages of the DSG / S Tronic over the standard cltch and gearbox?

I've read that they are more economical but what about durability and maintenance over the long haul?

    Thanks in advance.

I'm pretty sure the emissions and fuel consumption are slightly higher on the DSG equipped cars, not the other way round.

Actually DSG boxes are more economical than the manual variants according to VW's figures.

It's generally more fuel effecient on Petrol cars (remember them) and a little worse on the Diesel's.

The DSG box on the VW's doesn't have the best reliability record.

They are (very) basically an electronically controlled manual box as opposed to a traditional auto box.

They use a Dual Mass Flywheel and these can give the usual faults, they also need oil and filter changes at regular intervals unlike a normal gearbox. Not a problem as such, but the correct spec oil is expensive so should be a consideration when buying IMO, especially used.

The DMF went on my own 06 Passat about a year and a half back.. well when I say went, it was on the way out and needed changing (painfully expensive too!)

I read here before though about substituting a solid flywheel in these cases that doesn't give the same problems. Mine was changed like-for-like, but would this have been (or be, if it goes again at some point) an option - or would it have caused other issues?

    Just outta curiosity really :)

I'm not certain you can get a solid flywheel kit for the DSG box. The DSG would have been designed around using a DMF, unlike most normal gearboxes which have had DMF's added, so you may have issues if you fit a solid one.

Have a DSG in my GTI and its the best part of the car. Only disadvantage is the additional servicing costs (€120 every 60,000KM)

€120 for a DSG oil service? Where do you get it done, cheapest i've seen around is €175...

My DMF went aswell (2.0tdi), lucky enough it was soon after i bought it and they covered it under the 3month warranty. The mechanic said he's done loads of them and has never had to do the same car again....i assume they've improved the part?

I won't be changing my DSG passat for a long time, touch wood!

Probably depends on the mileage you do as well - depending on how long more I keep it, it could conceivably happen again (@1000km a week it adds up rapidly).

Great gearbox though. I haven't driven a manual in years anyway, but would fancy an A6.. do they have the same setup?

    Thanks for the replies.

Have decided against the DSG - I'm looking for something with a bit of pizazz and the Audi A3 fits the bill.

I appreciate they're expensive to repair - can anyone suggest an alternative with the same type of appeal? Not BMW or Mercedes
