Kevs Cocktail Arcade Cabinet - Restore and Mame Conversion - Cork, Ireland - April 2007 - Cab 3 of 3

Rough Unedited Notes from My Build Log below

    ************************************************************************************************
    History Of the Cabinet:

Its a Cocktail that got me started into Mame and arcades.
Used to play on Cocktail and Standups in Arcade in Coolea in Cork 25 years ago.
Loved it and about 5 years ago was talking to owner of the shop with Arcades and said man Id love to get hold of one of those old arcades he had.

And he was like sure I still have one in garage out the back, u want it
It hadnt seen light in 20 years, all glass top was smashed to bits, buckets of rust in the legs, inside filled with dirt and grime, loads of glass.
So brought it up in back of Ford Focus Its even powered on but cudnt amke out picture.

Actually very easy to restore one, well I Mame'd mine, redid The CP and put mirrored glass top on it, which is my fav part,
when its off, its a mirror but turn it on and light is allow out of top but not vice versa.

Its nothing special, but means alot more knowing i played same one 25 years ago and it was I that rebuilt it.
Kept same wood top, lucky it still had bezel, CP lights up, bottom metal work all repainted by hand and had to sandblast rust of legs 50e.

All in all I love it and actually looks fine in sitting room. Id recommend restore as was so easy.
14 inch PC monitor without casing even fitted into old brackets it came with,
Great for Vertical games, but loses half screen for horizontals games, but how bad.

    ************************************************************************************************
Notes from Another Post few Years back:

It was not used in 20 years and it worked but glass top in bits, barely working, could make out game on screen.

    Rebuilt it:
    Sand blasted legs, lots rust,
    repainted metal parts,
Redone a Control panel, basic but chrome LEDs.

But PC and 14 inch monitor inside, running Mame.
But is PC 14 inch monitors fitted in fine for me. Could use existing brackets.

Piece de resistance, mirror glass Table Top. When machine is off, cannot see screen,
power it on and screens light aloud pass thru mirrored top and like hidden screen.

Makes it old and modern in one go !!!
I agree with preserving where possible. But in my case its also nice having restored a Cocktail that was ready to be throw into a Dump,
after 20 years in a shed, I mean cocktail was in bits at the time.I had no idea about electronics side of things. I do now, but 3 years ago not a clue.

In my defense this was my first Attempt at building an arcade,
I kept all metal parts, preserve the Legs after costing a lot to get them sandblasted.
Keep all coin doors, resprayed all metal parts, all hinges and internals still kept.
The Wooden Top of it was in very bad shape but I restored that as well and kept Monitor Bevel.
As for electrical innards all stored away for preservation and game board is a Capcom Speed Rumbler Game
That I have on display in games room.

The Glass Top actually looks awesome with proper lighting,
Its modern looking too and mirrored effect hiding screen underneath makes this look pretty great even in corner of large sitting room.

The screen is original screen size too but last Video was very small because these cabinets are designed with 14 inch screen,
so screen only half used for horizontal games, but doubles in size for Vertical Games.

Now that is a thing of rare beauty.
    Nice one.
This is precisely the cab I wish I owned.

A 6 foot cab would be hard to smuggle passed the wife, but a cocktail would be easy enough. Sure you'd fit one in that attic of yours ;)

    Thanks Buddy,
Ya well without getting this by pure fluke at Zero Cost I probably still be stuck with just a PC and an x-arcade. Pure haunted, it was used in the sweet shop in gaeltacht in Coolea back in 80's, I actually played this cab as a kid :) So Thanks To Sean for this, R.I.P. Buddy!!!

Got the Idea for glass Top From Soho Bar in Cork City, where all their TVs are hidden behind the same glass,
really makes it I think, just trying to keep beer bottles off it at parties is nightmare :)

You never know, I may find one, languishing in a bin somewhere, I could come to it's rescue, bundle it upstairs and restore it in secret! :)

Of course the risk of emasculation would be very very high... and I like them where they are!

Is the Mirror on the top expensive? Great idea..

What you need is a Secret Batcave Pole into secret Basement,
    or a Hidden Walk-in wardrobe room :)

Where all your secret cabs reside :) Course Cabs are HUGE,
youll never pull it off, forget it, your screwed :)

There is on on Adverts :)

    Hey Keith
Mirror was 120e, cut to spec,
took 5 days to get it done in Cork Glass, Well Worth it :)

PS Some of your Blue ultralux Buttons are on the Last Bronx cab on other link, ones mans tacky LED Chromed bling, is another's treasure,
keep up good work with your Build Log Thread, I didnt have balls to add T Moulding to my Custom CP :)

Haha glad they where put to good use! I was in two minds about the TMoulding for ages, but decided to go for it in the end. it turned out grand. Like everything involved here, it always seems harder than it actually is when you try it.

Thanks Bud, I threw this up on ArcadeControlscom before, trying to help guy that was looking for ideas for a Cocktail and one a-hole thought this was rebuild was dead ugly :)

But between before and after Pic I did best I could,
especially building it in the kitchen :) So thanks all !!!

That is a stunning restoration! I love cocktail cabs, they are so different to everything else. You can just imagine the folk playing them back in the day in wine bars. Vodka Martini or a glass of Malbec on one side, 20 Johnnie Blue and a Motorola 'Zach Morris' phone on the other with some Duran Duran - Save A Prayer piped in for background ambience!

and you could see game, but not make it out, encrypted like Picture
Game Board in it was Capcom's Speed Rumbler Game:
