Black number plates...with black fonted numbers?

So I have a black car, and as a classic, legally it can have black plates - but is there a law against having black plates with black fonted numbers.

(By fonted numbers I mean the individual raised black plastic digits that were on the older red and white plates years ago....)

Okay so I'm not sure just how readable they would be - especially in the dark, but is it illegal?

Black numbers on a black background? I can't see that working out well for you. Any examples?

If there isn't a law against it - there should be.

No examples unfortunately, i'd say its a first.

In daylight the raised font will allow the profile to be somewhat visible, in the dark - i'd say forget it. They would look well put on for a show if nothing else ;)

It is a "daylight summer driver " in its defence, garda!!

@ Dades: I agree with you there should be, but if I can personalise my car the way I would like it to look legally, then let them go change the rules on my account. Although I do know there are precise rules for non-classic plates and I'm just waiting for someone to post a link to oppressive classic plate regulations.

Personally I hate the way a white number plate catches your eye, and detracts from the astethics of a nice car!!

Number plates have to be legibile, which covers amongst others things such as size, cleanliness, not being obscured by anything and anything else which the Gardai believe to be making them illegible.

I think you will only be attracting undue attention to yourself from the Guards if you do it. Not worth the hassle imo.

There is a law against it (and I can't be bothered digging it out again, if you search this section you'll find it somewhere).

If you have a plate with a black background, you can have digits that are:

    a) white
    b) silver
    c) light grey

    d) translucent - if so, then during the day they should appear white, and when backlit, the front digits should appear white and the rear ones white or red.

    That's your lot.

be cheaper to have no plates and no less likely to get a tug from the gards.

I assume you are trying for a similar effect on the pic of the golf attached (I don’t know how to display pics on main screen)
It’s got to be illegal, it’s very hard to read – any Garda would have you bang to rights, you would be easy pickings !!!

of course your black car could have a black switch that lights up in black when you press it and says "do not push this switch" and then it crashes into the Sun...
