Laptop for CAD

    Hi Guys,

Would anybody know the specs need to use 3d CAD? I am not sure of the programs name.

Somebody suggested at least a 1GB GFX card, 8 gigs of ram and an i7. In my opinion that sounds a little over the top. What would an average spec be for CAD 3D?

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks :)

The listed System Requirements aren't that special.

    AutoCAD
    Solidworks

But if you're going to be getting into it in a big way and don't want to pull your hair out waiting for it to do it's thing on detailed images then that somebody may be right.

Their's some nice i5s going that would probably do nicely that won't break the bank.

    Budget?
    Screensize?

The budget was originally 500, but I think they can stretch that to about 600 euro.

Screen size would be the average 15" I would imagine. I suggested a desktop but they are adamant in purchasing a laptop ;)

    Thanks for your reply.

    Asus - i5 2430, 4GB RAM, Nividia GeForce 520MX €593

Lenovo - i5 2410, 8GB RAM, Nividia GF410M (I'm not sure how well this GPU will perform with detailed CAD) €616

    Asus - i5 2410, 4GB RAM, 2GB Nividia GeForce 540M €630

    Asus - i5 2430, 6GB RAM, Nividia GeForce 520, 17 inch Screen €650

If you must go with consumer spec graphics i'd get something with a GT 540M at least. Low end or Integrated graphics and CAD don't go well together.

2GB makes no odds on that card. It can't utilize it. Still a good choice tho.

    Well for two reasons.

1.There is pretty much no game or program that uses over 1GB of memory.

2.The card its self isn't physically capable of supporting the extra 1GB.

Its a gimmick, but it does no harm to the card itself so its not a problem. Just something to be aware of so you don't spend more than you have to.

Your right....I was reading up abit on this there, you have to go all the way up to a Radeon desktop 6950ish Card before there is enough bus width and clock speed available to make use of more than 1GB Memory.

And even at that there's not much difference.

The GDDR5 listed in the notebookcheck spec of the 540M through me.

I don't get why Manufacturers do it at all so? It must cost them more but there doesn't really seem to be a knock on cost bump to the Consumer?

Unless they get extra sales from the deceit maybe??
