i have just noticed my back wheel is out of true there is a couple of mm side to side betewwn the highest and lowest point and maybe 3-4 mm on the highest to lowest point on the circumferance . what are the bad effects of this and how much does it have to be out before it would need to be retrued. please note its only a slightly above entry level trek hybrid , recreational cycling only so to speak but id still like to have it right. thanks in adance

A millimeter or 2 out of true is unlikely to be a big issue - most wheels tend to go a bit out at some stage.

However a 3-4mm variation between high and low point suggests something more fundamental. I would suggest getting your LBS to have a look at it, and this suggests you may have loose/weak spokes, and your brakes may well be rubbing the tyre in places
