VW golf - 1.4 petrol 2001

    Hi

Does anyone know if the fuel pump & lamba sensor is prone to go on a 2001 vw 1.4 petrol?

A main dealer in the north-west replaced the fuel pump a year ago and now I'm told I need to replace it again?

I have also had 2 lamba sensors replaced in the past year and a half and I am now told I need a 3rd lamba sensor installed?

It just seems that I am replacing the same parts over and over again! I think this seems a bit suspicious to me and I was wondering if anyone else thinks the same?

The main dealer in the north-west messed me around a lot in the past so now I'm wondering whether they actually did replace the fuel pump a year ago.

Fuel pumps wouldn't be overly common. Lambda's would depending on the driving style but also, lambda's are usually effected by another issue such as burning oil, which that engine is very prone to, so you need to have it properly diagnosed.

Whats the problems your having with it?

    Hi

My car burns alot of oil - i have to check it every week or so. So that would probably explain the lamba issues.

As for the fuel pump - what do you mean by "driving style". I live in a city during the week so dont drive it for much but I do drive about 300 miles every second weekend or so (though lately I have been driving 300 miles every weekend for the past 2 months or so).

The symptons are that my fuel gauge stopped working. Then about 3 days after that, the engine management light came on and stayed on. About 2 weeks after this, my fuel gauge is working again however the engine management light is still on and I'm worried that my car will stop working if I dont fix it (that happened the last time I ignored the engine managment light) : )

So would this sound about right?

The driving style comment was for the lambda's but if your burning nthat much oil then thats the cause of the lambda failures and will also be damaging the catalytic converter.

The other problem is nothing to do with the fuel pump I'd say. Much more likely that the dials are faulty, again, common enough on the golf. The engine light won't be connected to the fuel gauge issue and is an indication of another problem, possibly the cat/lambda problem.

    Thanks for your response.

So the engine managment light being on must be linked to the lamba sensor issue.

Not sure how they figured out that I need a fuel pump - I guess because my fuel gauge didn't work for two weeks - they must be able to link that this is faulty. I just find it hard to believe that it's faulty even though I have already replaced it a year ago.

Is there anything they can do to prevent the oil from burning so much? I guess it's probably because my car is 2001 and I also have over 130,000 miles on the clock.

The garage said "there is a piece gone in the fuel pump" and that's why they need to replace it.

But the dial being broken sounds more logical.

Not sure how a "piece" can go in the fuel pump

The engine light definitely isn't anything to do with the fuel gauge anyway.

The whole fuel pump shouldn't have to be changed anyway, there is a float and sender unit which gives the signal to the gauge. It may be the issue but I've seen several golf gauges going faulty.

As for the oil burning issue, its normally caused by worn valve stem oil seals so you could have these changed but you'd be looking at a few hundred euro to replace them though.
