Hi everyone, Im looking for some advice. I currently have an oil burner (external) and a solid fuel stove with boiler to heat my house (12 radiators). Im seriously thinking of getting rid of solid fuel cause its not capable of heating rads on its own and i dont get home til about 7pm so its not practical to start lighting fire then.
What are your opinions on installing a 20 kw approx. internal wood pellet stove and buying bagged pellets. How do these compare to oil burners as in cost to run etc.
Any help on this is much appreciated.

Pellets are expensive and seem to keep track with oil, gas etc as far as price increases go. Solid fuel stoves are generally good but you have to get used to setting them to suit your needs. There is a sticky on top of the plumbing and heating section related to stoves. I personally would exhaust all possibilities as regards best fuel to use and setting the stove before I binned it.

    Hi,

My experience is pellet fuel prices don't track oil prices, of course the cost of delivery rises with every increase in diesel prices which can cause prices to fluctuate a little.

When using a 20kw pellet stove / boiler system as the primary heating source I could not recommend using bagged pellet fuel to save money as the cost of bagged fuel is approximately 50% > 60% higher than bulk pellet.

What you could consider is running your oil system for about an hour say coming on at 6.30pm and off at 7.30pm, this would have your house warm when you arrive home and the heating system up to temperature by the time you light your stove so instead of trying to bring the house up to a cosy temperature your stove is only compensating for the actual heat loss in your home.
