You will have to go to a main dealer for that, bring your VLC and I.D for proof you own the car. How much does it cost? Probably €150 mark as my gf's old 00' 318 cost that for a new key.

when the cas is produced, 10 keys are produced at that time to suit that individual cas (car access system). The dealers nor anyone else can program these keys. Did you buy iCOM from bmw ag or off Ebay?
O.P. I would suggest you contact your local dealer/Independent BMW specialist. and ask them.

Icom was bought from BMW directly as u can c I work in a BMW garage and the key is programmed through the icom and over the phone line.i no this coz I've done it.so don't be giving wrong info with loads of keys just sitting somewhere that is rubbish.every body knows that the key has to be coded to the Imobilizer and so on.

It is the rectangular "key" that the E90 and later E60's had, or is it an actual key that I think early E60's came with?

The rectangular key's are fairly expensive, seem to remember it was well over €100 for the one I ordered for my Father in law's E90 earlier this year - possibly even over €200.

The actual Key might be a bit cheaper though.

@500SEL......... are you for real???? listen to yourself, telling a bmw tech that he/she is wrong.

i work in a similar industry and yes, the key needs to be programmed to the car.

    RIGHT!!!!!!!

Plus it is more than just BMW equipment that can program a key, here's a list of equipment for programming keys, scroll down to the BMW section to see multiples of tools for the job. I also have the software to program keys (& I'm not a dealer), I just need the key read/writer unit (available on EBay) but I've no need for it:
