Like the fact the Walker box has divx playback, might sway me to spend that bit extra

has anyone established what is the best box yet..there is to many options all in know is mheg5 is needed for subtitles.. so i believe im no expert..but would love to know what the best box out there is so i could just get that one without having to upgrade the box in 3-6-9 months and pay another 100euro have 2 boxes and could have just stayed with sky basic channels. great if its free but if i have to keep buying a newer better updated box.....whats the point

does anyone know what the difference is between freeview and freesat and do they have the same amount of channels as each other? Dublin

FreeView is UK terrestrial television through a roof aerial. It is only available in some border counties and parts of the East coast. There are a few channels on FreeView that are not free on satellite.
FreeSat is a branded free satellite based system. It is available throught-out the country using a dish and suitable box.

so any of the retailers selling free to air with a dish is just the same as freesat?

Yes and no. Freesat provides a full EPG for all channels in the Freesat bouquet, but a FTA set only has Now&Next for all the channels. Also, Freesat will upgrade the channel list as channels are added or deleted, but a FTA set must be rescanned. Software updates are over the air with Freesat, not with FTA.

As a consequence of this, Freesat has series-link which is absent from FTA.

Depends on the box you get.

The unit I have is a Humax Foxsat HDR that has a built in 300 gb hard drive. It is a twin tuner so you can record and watch at the same time. You will need two feeds from the sat dish for this. Currently they sell it with 500gb or 1000gb. Cost from Amazon at the moment is about £220. You need a sat dish set up as for Sky (28.2 deg East).

You will not be able to record Saorview at all with this so you need an alternative way of doing that.

    thanks in advance

I am getting a new TV with saorview approved can I use a portable aerial until I get round to buying and fitting a UHF? If anyone can help I would be grateful

    No-one can tell you.

85%+ of people need a proper aerial. It purely depends on where you live and if the window faces the UHF mast.

Thanku Watty. I am in Dublin 8 area and south facing

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,568 ✭✭✭Gerry Wicklow

Get a cheapo set top aerial from the €2 shop and try it. No big loss if it doesn't work. Get the aerial as near the south facing window as possible.
