Feeling a bit low

Am not sure where to start, I have been feeling a bit low. A contract I was working on finished up last week as there is no further work available. I have to go and sign on now for the first time ever and feel really odd about it, am meeting up with my friends for a Christmas night out on Friday and am a bit embarrassed about being out of work, one of my friends has just been on showing me her fabulous new car, the others all have great well paid jobs and I am the first one to be out of work.
I suppose I feel like I made a few career choices which in hindsight while they gave me excellent experience were not god longterm choices so I feel a bit foolish! My confidence has taken a knock and I hate the uncertainty of being without a wage, I know I am far from the only one going through this, I suppose I am just looking for some advice on how to handle the work questions! I am dreading them!
