Cuts to Transport, Tourism and Sport in 1st half of BUDGET 2012

    Is anyone is watching the 1st half of BUDGET 2012 today? I have heard cuts of €45million to Transport, Tourism and Sport.

    Do you think that was expected given that capital spending will amount to €3.9 Billion in 2012?

    What sort of cuts will come about this year?

    Also any thoughts on this new sustainable spending plan on how it will affect transport? (Seems to be a long overdue development given the state of this economy now)

    One negative that I have seen is that the school transport scheme is doubled from €50 to €100. Any reaction to that?

    Cuts to rural transport scheme being cut too.

    Particularly, would the increase in fares such as LUAS and DART in Dublin, would they go higher because of the leap card introduction.

    I have just found out that the NTA will decide on the changes to fares.

    Translation: The CIE unions come first - even if it drives more people away from public transport.

    Who are they codding. The subsidy is the same - it just comes more from the fare box.

    Privatisation is the only hope for Irish public transport at this point.

    I have just found out that the NTA will decide on the changes to fares.

    This has always been the case, the DOT/NTA have approved any fare increases, but Dublin Bus control discounts on traditional pre paid tickets.

    private company employees have endured a lot of pain already. 8% cut should equal 8% staff cuts. Sorry CIE workers, we all need to share the suffering, the only safe jobs should be profitable ones.

    NTA have to approve prepaid ticket prices as well.

    Just to clear up a point, I asked that fares might increase if the Leap card was introduced in Dublin (to make a further point) if commuters DIDN'T go on it.

    Transport Minister Leo Varadkar said that commuters in Dublin pay less fares if they use the Leap card rather avoiding it.

    Here's another one

    An article in The Sunday Business Post said that Bus Eireann are increasing their fares by around 10% next year. I'd say that is no surprise at that all.

    Minister has requested that CIE absorb some of the 8% cut. I say no fare increase and absorb all of the cut. This "lets hike the fares" shambles needs to stop. This is the CIE mentality. Keep relying on the subsidy and when its cut, target fares. Of course this is not just the preserve of CIE, I've seen it done to a degree in small private sector businesses too. Costs go up, so they hike prices. Its school boy economics.

    Cut your cost base and lower your price or maintain it. That's the way forward.

    Reaction from Dessie Ellis of Sinn Fein - typical of what I expected from them.
    Sinn Féin's Transport Spokesperson Dessie Ellis has criticised the impending rise in public transport fares due to a cut in State support for services.

    Deputy Ellis said: "Even in the boom times the State gave public transport companies like Dublin Bus, CIÉ and Bus Éireann a very low State subvention by international standards yet they worked very hard to provide the best service possible.

    "This meant that we saw every year fares rising due to increasing costs. Now, with cuts as high as 8%, these companies will seriously struggle to provide a good service which is affordable.

    "We need public transport to get people to work, keep down congestion and pollution and encourage a tourist and business-friendly environment."

    Some costs can't be cut arbitrarily - diesel will cost what it costs, as will electricity, parts, interest on loans etc. This means the 8% cut will actually need to be nearer 10 or more to deliver the needed budget balance.
