The C&H Budget Thread

Well, we've had discussions on the presidential election, college fees and various other things over the last while.

Why not have one about the budget? It's going to affect us all in some way or another.

I know being on minimum wage, that I really hope they don't increase taxes too much, I'm aware they're not increasing income tax, but I fear that all the indirect taxes will have a huge affect on me/my family. We're broke enough as it is that we could be hugely affected by them. Seeing as my Mum is self-employed, even though she's pretty much only working part-time lately she's not entitled to any benefits.

So yeah, how fúcked are you gonna be?

The reg fee increase actually isnt as bad as I thought it would be. Thank fcuk for that.

I never watch the news so can someone break down exactly what's being changed?

Unless fees come in for grant holders, i doubt that much is going to change for me or my family. We never experienced the boom times as good as everyone else seemed to (ie didn't go mad crazy spending outrageous amounts of money) so the crunch times don't hit us as hard as others.

I didn't even know the budget was today :o

€250 extra to the reg fee isn't TOO bad I suppose...

Only 250 euro rise to the registration fees, after all that fuss from the SUI. Bet they'll try and say their campaign had something to do with it

To try and soften the blow?

It was never going to be good if the taoiseach addressed the nation (first time in 25 years) and the budget is over 2 days. I reckon tomorrow will be worse, I think it's going into more detail about everything.

Hmmm they got rid of the maintenance grant for postgrads. Ends any chance of doing one in Dublin, so a stint abroad beckons methinks. Both \o/ and /o\.

Yeah, post-grad grant being gone means good-bye Ireland in a year or so's time. Not angry to be honest, it was bound to happen. I'm just glad I didn't vote- here's to not believing in garbage election promises! Woohoooo....ow, I think I hurt my soul.

So far it hasn't effected my family apart from the VAT rise and the House tax thing, but there's more to come tomorrow :/

they won't touch income tax but they're going to get the money out of us through other taxes. How is that different.

If they hike up the car tax I'm not gonna be a happy bunny:(

Its possibly worse, as it could lead to regressive taxation.

I have no idea what all the stuff in Budget at a glance means...I'll just go back to living under my rock...

Also thought that they were raising VAT from 2% to 23%, got a bit of a shock...but its raising it BY 2% :o

    I got away quite well.

I for one welcome the change to the social charge thing, means I won't have to pay that any more :)

It wasn't as bad as I thought (personally). Also pretty sure my mum will be able to avail of the mortgage relief thing which is good. Haven't had a chance to properly look at it all yet.

Going near single parents was a pretty darn nasty thing to do imo :/ That's the one gonna affect our family the most I think.

Thankfully, they're reviewing the disability cut. Even though it didn't affect us, it was a disgusting thing to cut and shameful
