Options available to someone with a medical degree?

One of my good friends who is now a final year medical student missed the deadline for intern application by about 20 mins :(

She is due to qualify in April 2012, and doesn't know what to do. I know that the final date for application to the UK intern system has also passed.

Does anyone have any ideas of other jobs that she could apply for as a medical graduate who hasn't completed intern year.

    Thanks in advance

Are you talking about doctor jobs or is she interested in biological research?

Are they that strict with intern apps these days? Did she try contacting intern central and giving them a sob story?

If she can't win them over, there aren't many jobs to walk into, afaik. If money isn't an issue, I would advise to do some electives, take the USMLE or similar and basically keep her head in the game. If money is an issue, she could probably work as a carer or nurse's aide.

As for research... not promising, in my opinion. Who'd hire a final med to be a researcher?

Well she's pretty much willing to do any kind of work, but something remotely medical/pharmaceutical would be preferable. Money is an issue with loans etc to start paying back.

Find some lecturers doing research in some area she's interested in and ask if there's any work going? A friend of mine got a summer job in an immunology lab after 2nd year of college, and was fairly well paid for it too.

There should be an intern co-ordinator in her medical school who should be able to help with this

There should be no issue. People drop out all the time (as in, withdraw their applications and turn down positions post finals/graduation/job commencement). And they aren't strict. See the HSE website for recent stats on Intern year.

According to the emails I received from our intern coordinator they are strict about the deadline. We were told that no applications would be accepted after the deadline.

You are correct. What I should have explained was she will most likely be accepted above over-seas trained applicants, but not 'existing interns', to fill the intern vacancies which have arisen the last 2 years that this matching process has been in existence, in which case that is not being strict.

The Friday December 2nd at 5pm deadline was a deadline, and obviously she will not be 'matched' for a position in July and instead will be put on the 'Reserve List' below Non-EEA applicants who applied on time (I'm randomly assuming for the purpose of explanation that she is EEA solely to point out that she can not skip above Non-EEA applicants who met the application deadline).

This means that if she does get a position (and I believe she will), in the days before the July rotation starts, it will almost certainly be in smaller teaching hospitals like Drogheda, Letterkenny etc, i.e. not the Mater, James ......the larger EEA-grad dominated teaching hospitals.

There were still a couple of unfilled intern positions in Beaumont this yr after the match, people who graduated/registered later got them.
