Left laptop on overnight. In morning the screen was black and would not respond to any click or tapping on keyboard. Reboot fixed. Just wondered why this is. it in on ac power and turns off display after awhile but display should come back when mouse clicked/keyboard tapped?

It should. How long did you wait after pressing power to wake it back up? It could take a while, it wouldn't be instantaneous.

i did not press power as power is set to shut it down if held down. i hit the keyboard and clicked the mouse button a few times. it takes a while yes but would usually hear a response straight away

You don't hold it down. You just press it once.

You should NEVER hold down the power button to turn it off as this can cause data loss and/or corruption!

disable hibernation on your laptop's power saver settings.

hibernation feature in windows has always been buggy at best.
