Crackling Christmas tree

Hi all I put my tree up on the 1st. Its my first time getting a real tree but we always had one when I was a child. The problem is it has started making a crackling sound. It freaked me out at first because I thought it was going on fire. I switched off the lights but it still crackles. My father reckons its the pine cones opening. Has anyone else experienced this with a real tree? I hope its not drying out all ready. It will be bald by Christmas:(

I don't have a real tree, but my first thought would be, have you watered it?
I do know you have to stop them drying out.
