Anyone know if it's possible to renew car tax early - before old disc has expired? Am due to renew end of Jan but want to avoid tax hike in upcoming Budget? I checked the motor tax site but didn't see anything. Anyone done this before?

    Thanks

If you renew regularly, then you should receive your renewal form this month and you can renew online straight away. My renewal form always comes a month before the month of renewal, if you get me.

As things stand, you need the renewal notification to do it in person and the same piece of paper contains the PIN which allows you to do it online so without the renewal notification you can't do it.

It comes two or three weeks before the old disc expires, not the month before. The OP's disc expires on January 31st so he won't receive the notiication until about the second week of January at which stage the rates will have increased.

Go to motortax website, hit forgot my pin. Fill out the details, get the pin sent by email and then renew. Mines up at the end of the month, just renewed it five minutes ago.

Yes but pin changes each year. AFAIK system is sensible enough to know you're still on current year so won't allow you to renew till you're within the renewal period. I tried before with my last pin and got message to that effect. Worth a try though.

    Hi all,
I just checked my tax renewal details and it runs out at end of month which means I can renew online now. Just wondering will my motor tax start from today or still finish at end of month... if you get me?

There's never an overlap, if you can renew it will start the day after the current disc expres.

As far as I'm aware you cannot renew until during the month that it expires so if the disc expires on Jan 31st 2012 you will have to pay the new rate in January.

You have missed the point that the OP was asking

The PIN is the last five digits of the cars VIN.

    From www.motortax.ie FAQ ...

In the case of the first taxing of a brand new or imported vehicle, the PIN is the last six characters of your vehicle's chassis number as printed on your RF100 form. You should have received your RF100 form either from your Motor Dealer or the Revenue Commissioners.

4Q. Do I use the same PIN every time I tax my vehicle online?
4A. No. A new PIN will be issued with each individual motor tax renewal/reminder notice.

What the OP is asking is this: If my tax expires on Jan 31st 2012, can I renew it this month (i.e. more than a month before it expires) and avoid the higher rates that will be in force in January which is when the official renewal notification will arrive?

    I say no, you can't.

My tax is up on 31st Dec 2011.

I have just gone onto w/site - Entered my Reg & done the pin retrival.

The webpage timed out - and then I followed a link in the error page. Entered my details & hit submit.

Email went into my Spam Folder within 5mins.. Gmail have the Government sussed.

    _____________________________________________________________________________________

Got into the site.. & I renewed with no problems. The rates for next year are still this years rates.

Go do it. I'd say its worth a try even if you are up sometime next year. It didnt seem to have any problem in mine running consecutively. Whats the worst that could happen? :)

That doesn't prove anything, renewing your tax disc within the month when it expires is busines as usual. The discussion here is asking 'can you renew earlier to avoid higher rates which will come in in January'?

My disc expires on Jan 31st 2012. Just to satisfy my curiosity I clicked on the 'PIN Retrieval' link on www.motortax.ie and entered my details. This is what I got...

The tax on this vehicle is not due. You will receive a renewal notice with PIN in the month your vehicle tax expires

which in my case means January 2012 and I will have to pay the new rate.

So it will not allow you to renew until within the month when the disc expires.

I'm due for renewal in the month of December. I received my renewal form, last week of October. This happens regularly.

Do you mean your tax expires on Nov 30th? It's possible that they send out renewals early because of the October bank holiday but in the case of tax discs expiring on Jan 31st next you cannot renew until the renewal notice arrives which will be in January.

    Hi,
I just got my motor tax re-newal form, they are charging me 2012 tax prices. My motor tax expires at the end of Dec. Ive tried ringing my local tax office but no-one answering (suprise, suprise)

    Can they do this ?

It would appear they can judging by a similar thread on boards. Your current tax expires on the 31st and your new tax begins in Jan.

Unfortunately the period you'll be paying for is all within 2012 so it looks like they are entitled to charge you the new rate.
