ive got a HDD here that decided to erase all the data on my friends laptop. couldnt boot into windows, so i tried a format and a fresh windows install thinking it was a virus or something.

windows 7 instillation freezes at the "unpacking contents 0%" part. using a working USB bootable ISO so error cant be down to a scratched disk or anything.

plugged the HDD into my PC and ran a quick error scan on HD tune. no damaged blocks found. tried again with an slow thorough scan and HD tune froze half way through. rescanning now but not optimistic.

    any programs/advice ye can recommend?

at the price of HDD's now its almost worth his while getting a new laptop for €450, so im looking to hopefully find a bad sector and move it off the formatted area? likely?

Did you try running the onboard diagnostics that most laptops have.
You generally have to press one of the function keys at restart (often F2 but may vary with manufacturer).

You can also check the make of the hard drive and download a diagnostic ISO file from the hard drive's manufacturer website which you can then burn to a CD and boot on.

thanks. yea i tried the inbuilt dell diagnostics and everything passed but the HDD.
HD tune just failed again, and i could swear its in the exact same point of the scan as last time :/

the laptop was apparently left in the shed or something overnight whilst turned on, so i suspect some sort of moisture damage??

its a samsung spinpoint 250gb. ill look to see if samsung have their own diagnostics tools.

any other programs i could try?
