Sold item on eBay - no contact from buyer

I sold a mobile phone on eBay yesterday at 5pm. Between then and now I have had no contact from the buyer. Worryingly the buyer has zero feedback and only registered last Thursday.

Am I being impatient or should they have paid by now? I can't report them until Wednesday. Personally I always pay instantly. I've sent them an invoice yesterday and today. I also messaged them asking what's happening very politely.

Just wondering if anybody has any advice?

Worryingly this seems to becoming a regular thing on e-bay.

From what I've read (cannot remember where) is that it's other sellers with an item the same as yours making a new account then buying the item if its cheaper than theirs.

I was looking into it as it happened to someone I know selling a DSLR 4 times in a week, very annoying and e-bay don't seem to care because they get the insertion fee's ect...

    Honestly, you sound very impatient.

Just because you pay straight away does not mean everyone does. Did you say in the listing that you require payment within X amount of days?

Sometimes I pay straight away and sometimes I pay a day or two after the auction ending.

Personally on my auctions I ask for payment within three days, but if the buyer can't pay within three days, then for them to contact before bidding to let me know.

Just because the buyer has zero feedback and hasn't contacted you isn't reason to worry.

Just have patience and if they haven't paid with 5-7 days, send them another message/invoice and if still no contact, open an unpaid item dispute on eBay.

In future, if you haven't already, specify in the auction that you require payment within X amount of days.

Give it a couple of days. maybe the person doesn't have access to a computer.
and doesn't know yet they won the auction.

  • I'm opening a dispute at the earliest possible opportunity which is Wednesday at 5pm!!!

Thats happened to me a couple of times recently. 1st time was a couple of weeks ago and 2nd time was 3 days ago.I'm opening a dispute on that one tonight. The dispute closes automatically when/if the buyer pays.

  • I can't understand the people saying I'm impatient. Surely if you're the buyer you'll want the item ASAP and the longer you take to pay the longer you have to wait?

Did you or did you not specify on the listing that you require payment within x amount of days? If you didn't then you are to blame really, as most sellers (in my experience) want payment within seven days, usually if they want it sooner then say so in the listing. If you didn't specify in the listing, then maybe whoever bought your item assumed you require payment within seven days rather than straight away. As I said, if you didn't specify the payment time frame, then you've no one to blame but yourself (my opinion)

Maybe the buyer is waiting for money to go into their PayPal account, maybe they had to go to the bank to lodge the money, etc. Just because they haven't paid straight away doesn't mean they don't want your item.

Just because they didn't pay straight away does not mean they are out to scam you. As I said before, just because you pay straight away, that does not mean that others pay straight away.

I still personally believe you are being too impatient.

I know your pain Daniel Enough Slipknot... but it's been just over a day tbh. Give them a few more days.

I'm selling a load of items on Ebay - the majority have been fine and paid within 24 hours.

Although one item was sold on 24th, another on the 28th another on the 1st.

Sent them all invoices late last week and am still yet to be paid.

Sent the two on the 24th and 28th a message earlier saying "I would like to be updated or whether they want it or not".. if I heard nothing by the weekend, they're all being reported as non-buying-bidders, give them neg feedback and I'll relist them.

    Pain in the arse though!

Was it an auction, or a Buy it now? If auction, then it could be the buyer has been offline and not checked if he won. Give that a couple of days, though I'd agree with you that a buyer would generally check and pay ASAP in order to get the goods quickly.

If it was a BIN, then there's no excuse for not paying immediately. If that's the case, I'd say this is a scam buyer, or wasting your time in some way like homer_simpson pointed out.

If they don't pay though how can you leave negative feedback?

I ask because I once (about three months ago) I sold some shoes and the buyer never paid, so I opened an unpaid item case and nothing happened, the buyer never paid then eBay closed the case.

I tried to leave a negative feedback but couldn't because no payment had been recorded for that transaction.

Have eBay changed it now so you can leave negative feedback for a buyer who never paid?

A seller cannot leave negative feedback, at all. That option has been removed about two years ago.

@Daniel Enough Slipknot, I'd give him till tomorrow. After that it's highly unlikely that the buyer is genuine. Start non paying bidder process to get your listing fee credited.

I know now why some sellers put on their listings for bidders with less than 10 feedback to contact them before biddiing. Don't know if it works or not though.

I only discovered this tonight if you change your ebay preferences in the account section using this link it can cut out a lot of non payers:
    http://offer.ebay.ie/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?BuyerBlockPreferences

    or so they say.

    I currently block buyers who
Have received 2 unpaid item(s) recorded on their account within 12 month(s)
Have 4 policy breaches reported within 1 month(s)
Have a Feedback score of -1 or lower

Anything after a week I start unpaid proceedings

  • Opened an unpaid item case but I'll be damned the buyer has another 4 days to respond. Ridiculous.

THink you're being a bit too impatient here. 4 days is appropriate

    What a ridiculous decision!

One of the items I sold was a copy of Blade Runner - been waiting over 2 weeks for payment, no contact from buyer or anything. I go onto the buyer's profile and see the last feedback he left was for * SUPRISE SUPRISE * a copy of Blade Runner on DVD from someone else on the SAME DAY he won my auction.

I've opened an unpaid buyer dispute but it was listed at under 99c so it didn't cost me, so probably not much point!

This guy has great feedback.. wonder how good his feedback would be if Ebay allowed sellers to leave negative feedback if he carries on like this.

    Pisses me right off!

His feedback wouldn't really matter though if he wins the auction. No difference to a seller whether the buyer has a score of 1 or 10,000

You'll get your final value fee back so it's something at least

I don't mind having to wait 4 days for payment but when it's a buyer that has zero feedback I think I know what to expect.

Of course, but it cold be that a first time buyer isn't fully aware of the rules/regulations/procedures.

4 days for a dispute resolution isn't too bad

  • I found the buyer on facebook....it's a kid using his Mother's yahoo email address. Sigh...

I'm half leaning towards putting the item up for sale again as a BIN but there's always the slim chance they might pay.

Yes of course I like to give them the benefit of the doubt but I was caught out twice recently one had zero the other had two positive but the two comments more or less said that he was a waster. Neither paid.

  • If the "buyer" doesn't pay and I win the unpaid item dispute then can I leave negative feedback?

unfortunately not because no purchase took place to leave feedback on.

He's given a no payment 'strike' though. if he does it agin, he'll be barred from bidding on auctions from anyone (like me) who specifies this

I think its possible to get the unpaid item assistant to start automatically after 4 days and close automatically after I think 8 or if the buyer pays sooner or maybe I just took that up wrong.
