Can anyone advise me on a ' middle of the road ' tablet to buy for my son for Xmas. I am looking at one in Smiths toy store, which is an Elonex one.
    Any suggestions.
    Cheers

That depends on his age and what you're hoping he'll get out of it.

I assume that because you've posted this in the Apple forum that you're considering an iPad???

The suitability of an iPad is huge. I have a 3 year old and he gets a great kick out of it. I didn't buy it especially for him, though, and it's an expensive toy if it's just for a child.

If you think your son would want a tablet exclusively for himself and that you wouldn't be allowed near it, then the iPad is probably an expensive solution. But if you have the funds for it, you will certainly get far better value for money from it in the long run. Some of the ones that are just for kids will be left to one side very quickly as the child grows up, whereas an iPad will last for years.

As for how other tablets stack up, your best bet is to ask in Smiths. The assistants there should be able to point you in the right direction for the best one suited to the age group.

    Thanks waynegalway,
I was thinking of the more spurious makes, Archos, Yarvik, Asus etc etc that he will use for games and a bit of web surfing. He's only 8 so an Ipad is a bit much a.t.m.
    cheers

As this is the Apple Media devices forum, you might be better off asking in the gadgets forum:

A cost effective alternative to iPad (and probably more suitable for a child) is an Archos 80 G9. It's an 8" Android tablet (running Honeycomb), is a Wi-Fi only unit (although you can get a 3G dongle for another Stg£45 if you wish) and is currently available from http://www.qvcuk.com for Stg£230 + P&P of Stg£11. This comes with £150 of extras (case, software, screen protectors) and you can pay for it on "Easy Pay" which is 4 equal monthly payments (it is delivered immediately). QVC policy is you have 30 days to try it out but as its Christmas they are giving you until mid Jan to test and return if you don't like it.

Let's be clear, it is no iPad (which I also have) but for an 8 year old it should be more than enough. I would be wary of buying ultra cheep, generally speaking you get what you pay for and I see no point in paying €150 for something that you child will leave down due to frustration and you won't use yourself due to it being glitchy.
