Telling family that you are depressed

Has anyone any experience of this? I have been depressed for quite a while but last week I sought help and have started on anti depressants. My doctor advised me to tell my family whats going on for support.

The only problem is that my family dont seem to like me very much because of all the agro I have caused being so depressed. I tend to snap at them a lot and the majority of the time no one will talk to me. Its my own fault I know which is why I have decided to get help.

As a teenager I was on antidepressants for a few months after attempting suicide and my mother knew about this. After three months she "lost" the prescription and when I asked her if I could renew it she said I didnt need the meds anymore. So as you can see she didnt exactly support me fully before and I think she thought it was a phase.

I just dont know if I should tell them at all and if I do I'm worried they will fob me off again and think I am being a selfish drama queen.

If you don't think your family will be helpful/sympathetic/supportive during this difficult time then don't tell them. Sadly, blood doesn't always equal good.

Have you talked to your doctor about counselling? What about your friends, can you count on their support?
