Which ipod? Classic, nano, touch?
I've never known an ipod to get particularly hot. The touches can get warm when you're running an intensive app tho.

Is it under warranty?

Are you charging from USB or mains? A quick google (which I assume you've already done?) suggests they can indeed get hot, particularly when charging from a wall adaptor.
