    Hi there,

I was driving my car yesterday and i noticed a burning smell from the engine when i stopped. Turned out that it had completely run out of water.

Does anyone know what could cause this. The car was only serviced about 4 weeks ago.

Any advice greatly appreciated - i don't know anything about cars.

    Thanks

If there was a burning smell and no water then obviously the car was overheating badly. Was there no indications from your gauges?

The fact that it was serviced may be irrelevant , something could have burst or began leaking since then.

As for asking what could have cause there to be no water, any number of problems could cause it. What car and engine is it?

fill it up and see if it has any leaks. It sounds as if it was still runiing when you stopped it, may be alright.

If you had it serviced and they added anti freeze, I believe anti freeze has a habit of leaking out of hiles that water wont fit through, might be it, but it sounds like a hose failure or similar.

    Thanks for the replies guys.

Its a 99 Opel Astra - going to bring it to the garage at the weekend. Hopefully its only a small problem.

Didn't notice the gague going up - it was still working when i stopped it so hopefully will be ok

Ex had the same thing happen in her Laguna, noticed the smell. I found that her waterpump had a small leak, and coz the weather had been so bad lately she hadn't really noticed the drip coming off the pump onto the driveway. When was your waterpump done last? Would agree with the lads though, head gasket is a very common thing on sum opels.
