You shouldn't be driving at a speed that would throw the back out to begin with. Snow socks aren't designed for driving "normally", you still have to take into account that you're driving on snow!

If you want to get somewhere fast in snow, you need to be driving a different vehicle than a standard car with snow socks.

On pure ice, if you have snow socks on the front wheels and just regular summer tyres on the back, it might be speeds around 10km/h that will throw your rear and make car skidding. Especially if you are going down the hill.
Putting 4 snowsock would be definitely better than 2.
On the other hand, snow socks are rather to be used in emergency if you get stock somewhere, so I doubt anyone would bother putting 4 of them on.

What kind of vehicle are you thinking about?

Something based around all wheel drive with studded tyres?

You only need to fit snowsocks on the front wheels of a FWD car to provide traction & steering. Unless you decide to drive like an idiot in very poor driving conditions (fast cornering, hard braking, etc) then the back should not flick around on you.

RWD cars need the rear tyres covered as a minimum however a 2nd pair is recommended for the fronts to assist steering grip.
