The Irish Stereotyping in Glee

Folks come on. I am slightly offended by this. Since when did stereotyping (of that magnitude) become ok? AND worst of all - it was all incorrect. Mammy, the incessant wearing of green, lucky charms etc. Plus his accent - it appears to be what the US think Irish people sound like.

If Glee is supposed to be about acceptance and all that jazz, why are they stereotyping to that degree? Why aren't all the gay guys flaming queens? Why isn't Sue a lesbian? If they are going to have any continuity at all - stereotype everyone!

Or maybe I'm just bitter because the shine has gone of Glee for me.

Isn't that guy Northern Irish? From Derry if I remember correctly. He won the Glee Project and there he sounded exactly the same so, being a foreigner who can't tell a real Irish accent from a fake one, I assumed this is how they talk in Derry :o

I agree about the ridiculous stereotyping, but I think we only notice this because we're Irish- the same applies to Mercedes and her "strong black woman diva" stereotype, Rachel's "Jewish princes" stereotype, Kurt's camp gay stereotype, Mike Changs pushy Asian parents, Santanas fiesty Latina stereotype, Finns dumb jock stereotype... everyone in the whole club is pretty much a cliche. But we really only notice the Irish guy because he's a stereotype that applies to us.

Also, his accent is his own. Although if we're being picky he's technically British not Irish, as he's from Londonderry.

    Just sayin'.

I am American, and I too wince at the awful stereotyping of this new Character, thinking "Jaysus! The Irish would hate this guy for allowing them to portray him in such a stereotypical manner!" And it also leaves me thinking "Don't these writers research ANYTHING????" It is like watching a train wreck this season! Even the music choices seem to be making a downward turn. Did they hire an entire new staff?

Wait, hold on now just a minute, Glee has its own thread on boards?!?! This issue deserves its own thread.

When I saw the promo for this episode i was quite offended but watching it I changed my mind.
Rory is staying with Britney who thought that he was a leprechaun. He wanted to get with her and played up to it. Nothing to it really.

The Irish lad was the reason I started watching Glee and his character is the reason I stopped again. It didn't offend me I just thought it was silly.

Ah come on now, are you really offended by this? Glee has probably the most unbelievable and unrealistic storylines ever(Artie joining the football team, I mean really?), anyone who thinks it represents real life is deluded. Nearly every character perpetrates some sort of stereotype. That's what the show is and it's how it's always been. Also I think Rory has gotten much better as the season has gone on.

And besides, Chinese and Indian people get stereotyped far more than Irish people in modern US television.

Hence why I would love the Irish guy to be transexual, it could work perfectly, he sings hi notes (brilliantly, I'm jealous) he's character can change no matter what. (Most of us TS where in awe of the girls like Britney as I assume alot of RG where) also he can sing high enough and he could pass. does anyone else think he should be Transgendered? :) Also we are the only people not reposent in the Glee Club. I'm really sad about that, I will cry for everyone else that 's characters, the gay person just outing themelves, the jock being the hero for other reasons, the drama queen finding love, undramatically, and I under stand all of their sterrotpyes . I would just like to see The transgendered sterrotype over turned and also mentioned in Glee, it would make my post :)
