Tyre Problem - 2nd runflat tyre gone

Ok so I drive a car that's on 255/35/19 runflats on the rear.

Last week coming up from Galway I had a problem with one of the tyres. It was a semi-blow out. Anyway the runflat tyre was wrecked and came away from the inside of the alloy. I ended up having to be towed back up to Dublin as I couldn't get anyone with the right tyre.

I got a new runflat sorted on Monday morning at a cost of €400 and I thought I was sorted.

Anyway I was driving home this evening and I got a horrible feeling that something was up with the new tyre. Next thing I can hear and feel that there's a problem with one of the tyres. I get out and check and the new tyre I got put on is flat.

    I've a few questions:

The tyre pressure monitor sensor hasn't come on yet. How reliable are these monitors?

Is there any sort of warranty when you purchase a tyre?

Is it worth trying to put air in the tyre and seeing if I can drive on it?

I haven't been able to see if there's something in the tyre, like a nail, but assuming there's not do I have any comeback?

I'm gutted at the moment - I spent €400 on a brand new tyre less than a week ago and it looks like the tyre is fu*ked.

Also, I'd love to meet the man who invented run-flat tyres and kick the shi* out of him. He deserves to be castrated.

    AAARRRGGGGHHHH!!!

would u not have been better purchasing two oddinary tyres than spending that on one run flat tyre
id be checking the alloy for cracks

I was concerned about cracks in the alloy as well. However, the reputable establishment that replaced the tyre confirmed that there were no cracks in the alloy and that there was no leakage.

If its leaked once it'll leak again. Take it back to where you got it and request an inspection. Or go elsewhere for an inspection and then go back to the original supplier if they've given faulty goods..... thing about tyres though is its difficult to prove fault with the supplier as a whole heap of things can happen once you drive away. Personally I think they're crazy money to avoid a minor inconvenience but each to their own....

Run flats don't look flat when they have no pressure in them?

I'd have the alloys checked, the 19" BMW alloys are not great quality and crack very easily when the tyre is driven with no pressure.

I'm willing to bet that, if they are on the rear, that the inside of the tyres where completely shredded, have a look at the inside of the remaining rear tyre and check.

Yea, on rear and the inside of the tyre was wrecked.

Only two tiny marks on the whole tyre but the crowd who fitted the tyre are claiming it must have been a puncture and one of the tiny slits it the problem.

Anyway the tyre is going for an inspection and I'll have to buy another new tyre while I'm waiting for the result of the inspection.

The guy checked the alloy again and was convinced that the alloy was perfect.

Is it an E90 3 series?

Where was the damage on the new tyre? Without specific fitting equipment its very easy to damage run flat tyres when fitting them to the rim.

    E93.

On the inside of the tyre.

I got it done by one of the main tyre suppliers around.

Did you rerun the tyre monitor?
You're supposed to rerun it if you change a tyre or wheel as otherwise it can't monitor the new tyre for leaks.
It takes about 10-15mins for it to fully test all tyres again...recently put on winters on mine and it took about 15km before it came back with the all clear.

That is no guarantee it was done correctly unfortunately.

The factory set up of the rear suspension on the e90/e93 means that with large wheels fitted, the inside of the tyres always wears prematurely. It'll be an ongoing problem unless you have the suspension geometry changed from the factory set up.

But, for a brand new run flat to fail as yours has, there is either damage to the wheel or it was damaged when fitting.

Are you sure about the tyre size? The rear 19" wheels on an e93 should be 255/30/19 If your tyres are too big they could be rubbing.

The tyre pressure sensor does not actually measure the tyre pressures. It uses wheel rotation speed data from the abs sensors to work out if the circumference of the tyre is shrinking - which should only happen if the pressure is reducing. I've found this to be quite reliable in my e92. Only a month ago I got a nail in one of my rears and the warning light came on when the pressure was at 2.2 bar - I normally have it at 2.6 bar. It was a slow puncture because after I pumped it up again, it lost no more than .1 bar before getting it plugged the next day. Another time, I did a wheel rotation and there would have been no change in the pressures but the warning came up within 500m of leaving the tyre depot.

A friend of mine has an e93 and had no end of problems with the 19" wheels cracking. Spent a fortune on runflats and new wheels, again the tyres shredded on the inside. I think the car had to be towed three seperate times.

He eventually brought a case against the dealer (JD) for selling a car that was not fit for purpose and they replaced the wheels with 18's and he hasn't had an issue since. Doesn't help you but that was his experience.
